The Empty Man Ratings & Reviews
- j.pete6September 8, 2025Opening is great, mid section struggles to find its way and eventually does. Personal highlight is the "yeah, no" scene in the forest lmao. Ending is ambitious, but ultimately doesn't completely land. I like the way it goes off the rails in the end, but there's some stuff that just doesn't work plotwise. Spoiler: Our main guy is a tulpa, but it creates a bunch of glaring plotholes. Script gets a bit too messy because of it. Honestly wish they would've gone all in on the lovecraftian aspect throughout the movie, instead of the whole boogeyman angle in the middle. Distractingly bad acting by Sasha Frolova btw, dear god. Definitely worth a watch. Will not be going in my top list or anything.
- avaneededNovember 28, 2025Movie you can't watch if there's a risk of falling asleep cause there are some slow parts that might push you over. Set up for the mythos is fairly good with like a couple weird decisions, but it works overall. Middle section part of the movie is alright, and some parts get better and some get worse towards the end. Feels like they didn't fully want to tie the story together but have the viewer decide some aspects of it. Might require a second viewing to make sure I got everything since, as I said, I was struggling to stay awake during some parts that were slower, I was watching this at around 11:15pm, finished by around 1:15am. Still think the set up and mythos are the stronger parts about it and would recommend it to fans of horror mixed with thriller, might even be necessary to be a philosophy enthusiast to be invested in some of the approach to some concepts.
- gergletOctober 18, 2025Last 5 minutes were whatever but good movie regardless, worth the watch
- juicecaesarAugust 20, 2025Has some chilling moments, just a so-so film. Not the worst yet not the best.
- runinhotAugust 9, 2025The movie was great till the last 30 mins.
- AUKYJuly 1, 2025First 20 minutes were good. Then it all fell apart into an incoherent mess.
- PatrikStarJune 28, 2025The first 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes are absolutely PEAK. The movie kind of felt like Fincher meets Alien in those parts.
- DavCharMay 20, 2025I absolutely despise movies like this. Is this a movie about an urban legend (The Empty Man) who goes around killing anyone who blows on an empty bottle and thinks about him? Or is this a movie about an ancient evil entity being manifested in a cult? Pick one, you can't have both! I really hate when the protaganist has been "imagining" the whole thing (or being programmed or whatever). Really lazy script writing. It's like the writers partway through the script all took LSD and then finished the script. I only gave it two stars because parts were really scary, otherwise I would have given it one star.
- jackmeatApril 8, 2025My quick rating - 5.5/10. I'll give it points for trying really hard to come up with something new on a take that has been done many times before. The cult is conjuring up some supreme being type of thing. But this movie tried to do way too much (hence the 137-minute runtime), which could have been trimmed down. Still, it does succeed in telling its story even if it took too long in doing so. In the course of investigating the disappearance of a local girl, a retired cop (James Badge Dale) uncovers an urban legend called the Empty Man, which is awakened by blowing in a bottle at night on a bridge. Something we most likely all have done- ok, maybe not all, but you still may want to check over your shoulder. So after this, you have but 3 days before he arrives, and then everyone is in danger. As you'd expect, the cop does so, and now he and anyone around him is in trouble. Then the point I made takes over as it flies way off the rails in what it tries to do, and I can't go much further into it without spoilers. I liked the idea of it more so than the usual fare of this type lately, but in forcing the outcome, it lost some of its luster. This one could go either way up or down depending on your tastes, so I would leave this in a check it out and see what you think. Looks pretty good, especially at the beginning.
