The Djinn Ratings & Reviews

My quick rating - 4.1/10. This had the premise setup but than really rushed into what should've had a little bit more story to lead into it. You would think maybe explaining how this conjuring of a Djinn is going to work, or possibly making it look like just anyone who can read can just whip one up for themselves. But anyway, so this is what happens, and then the rules of the game are told via a narrator throughout the rest of the flick. So our kid is mute, and I am sure when he finds a book that can grant you your wish, you can guess what he wants. There is some backstory as well about his parents that isn't described all that well, but that isn't too important. Such as this whole movie is, not really well explained. So Dad is at work, and our boy's new playmate, the Djinn, is stuck home, and if you know the Djinn story, they aren't all about giving away wishes, they want to kill you. That is your setup, those two, which is a big drawback to this movie. It is just them, and in gloriously boring fashion, the Djinn tries to kill him. The technical aspects of this one are all there, and quite good. Just not enough meat to it. The intensity between them is poor, and as with all horror movies, the decision-making gets beyond ridiculous to extend the whole thing (it would've been a far better short film, and maybe it was to begin with). All that to lead you to a silly ending that may or may not lead to a sequel. I kind of hope not.
Crooked Marquee

This indie horror movie isn't just a lesson on the price of getting what you wish for; it's also an 82-minute class on how to make an unnerving film on the cheap.
Should I See It
Michael Ward
Small, but mighty. Efficient, but effective. The Djinn works its black magic in thrilling and captivating ways.
Cinema Crazed
Emilie Black
The Djinn is a film that builds dread and fear by layering a good story, good directing, strong acting, atmosphere with great images and sound, and keeping these almost minimalist to a great effect.
Fat Guys at the Movies

It's about cherishing what you have and not wishing for what has gone... it's an effectively made thriller.

Charbonier and Powell know how to brew atmosphere and empathy, creating child characters who feel fleshed out and not like precocious poppets to be pitied or fawned over.

Even genre fanatics may find themselves surprised by just how well-made and genuinely creepy it is.

There's a great deal of style here and enough innnovation on display that I'm eager to see what Charbonier and Powell with a bigger budget and a much larger set.

The Djinn wouldn't work as well as it does without Ezra Dewey as Dylan, the kid at the center of the story.

The Djinn is often as plodding as it is impersonal. This movie crawls whenever it needs to sprint.

I cannot say The Djinn did much for me.

The Djinn fails to ground its attempted scares in any kind of logic -- even the paranormal kind -- or personal stakes.
Austin Chronicle
Richard Whittaker
With their debut, Charbonier and Powell proved a rare grasp of childhood horror, and keeping the perspective of youth among adult sins.
Aisle Seat
Mike McGranaghan
This is a small-scale, yet wildly effective picture that grounds its horror moments in a story that has emotional value.

The Djinn might not be as effective, surprising, or subtle some horror hits, but the execution is so tight and simple that it just works.
NYC Movie Guru
Avi Offer
Repetitive, uninspired and sporadically creepy with a breakthrough by Ezra Dewey. It's not as dull or inane as Separation or The Unholy, but not as effective as a psychological horror film like the recent Come Play.
The Blogging Banshee

The Djinn incorporates frightful tension and emotional drama to fill the often overlooked intermediate family-horror space.
San Jose Mercury News

"The Djinn" is rooted in classic be-careful-what-you-wish-for O. Henry and Stephen King storytelling.
New York Times
Kristen Yoonsoo Kim
The film betrays its own less-is-more philosophy and becomes weighed down by exposition - but it's a tense, thrilling ride nonetheless.
Variety
Dennis Harvey
This lean thriller doesn't provide much food for thought, but it delivers a compact dose of extreme jeopardy.
