- brycoward20. Januar 2026The Dead Center feels like a grittier, less refined precursor to Smile, centering on a psychiatrist who "catches" a supernatural curse from a mysterious patient. While Smile succeeded with a razor-sharp, simple concept, this film falters with ill-defined rules that leave the central threat feeling vague and confusing. Rather than leaning into the psychological torment of not being believed, the narrative chooses to "play in the muck" of its bleak, sterile hospital setting. Shane Carruth delivers a frantic performance, but the script eventually strips his character of all agency, leaving him a passive victim by the final act. It is a solid exercise in low-budget dread, but it lacks the narrative tightness needed to make its abstract horror truly hit home.
