A young officer, falsely imprisoned by his jealous "friends," escapes and uses a hidden treasure to exact his revenge.
- JeremiahApril 6, 2026This is now the 3rd adaptation ive seen of this famous story and its my least fav but I still liked it quite a lot. Ive never read the book but i was assuming the new PBS miniseries was much closer to the book than the ‘02 movie, being that it was almost 8 hours long (the pbs show) it had so much more than 02 movie had in it. This has almost all that stuff… but only in an 1:45 runtime. So the story, especially after seeing the 8 hour miniseries… felt like it was going at hyperspeed, especially after the prison point of the movie. The pbs show did plenty of showing while telling, it had plenty of time to do so, while this (75), takes huge chunks of telling and not showing its story., especially in the back end. It had to speedrun everything practically in the back end.And while 02 movie has much less of the story, what it does have it focuses on so well with a few creative changes that i enjoy, and nostalgia, that its still my fav. 02 and the pbs show definitely sells the relationship dynamics and emotions much better than 75 here too. I fear i might not have been able to get the finer details of the story with this (75) though because of that speedrun and its telling and not showing a lot, but because i just watched the pbs show with 8 hours of pouring into every detail. I was able to get it all fairly easy. Still. This has the charms of the 70’s (that feels more 60s), has some great performances. And still tells the it’s very full story despite its short runtime.
