The Cold Light of Day Ratings & Reviews
jackmeat
April 18, 2025
My quick rating - 4.5/10. I was expecting bad, but not so much. Still not a very good movie, which takes some serious names and insults them with a half-written script and utterly pointless "twists" that were neither needed nor fooled anyone. Bruce has little to do with this one, and there was no saving it, even if the ultra-talented Sigourney Weaver stuck her way out through the whole thing. Cavill was just hitting his stride, so I suppose his appearing in this is excusable, but still. At least have a story in hand that isn't a made-for-TV movie mash with every political conspiracy jammed into a briefcase. The action wasn't too bad, and the scenery was nice to look at, so it does get some points here and there. Still not as bad as the box office reflected.

An unnecessary but inoffensive espionage thriller that you have to assume was an inch away from going straight to DVD.

... the kind of shoddy, low-rent stinker the robots on Mystery Science Theater 3000 used to enjoy ripping to shreds.
Creative Loafing
Matt Brunson
Sigourney Weaver, who last year suffered the indignity of backing up Taylor Lautner -- Taylor Lautner, for God's sake -- in the daft Abduction, now finds herself essaying the role of the villain in another action flick that's nearly as dopey.

Cavill is no substitute for Van Damme, whose self-critical performance gave the earlier movie much of its heft

Fans of inane and/or unnecessary expositional dialogue will have a field day. Everyone else can Netflix Hudson Hawk and forget to watch it, thus having more fun than anyone who shells out $10.50 for this tedious stinker.

The Cold Light of Day is an appropriately named action drama. It generates very little heat or light.

An average suspense thriller made a little better by a no holds barred performance from Sigourney Weaver

If you were to look up the word "generic" in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of this film's poster right next to it.

[Weaver is] the only one having any fun - and that includes the audience.
One Guy's Opinion
Frank Swietek
A perfunctory chase movie that drops in its tracks long before it reaches what's supposed to pass for a rousing climax.
Los Angeles Times

The script throws around phrases like "intel," "terrorist" and "rogue operative," but as time bombs go, the briefcase-versus-loved-ones ultimatum barely ticks.
New York Times
Stephen Holden
A catastrophe worth noting only for the presence of its name cast.

Apes The Bourne Identity so slavishly yet so boringly it winds up with no identity at all.

This isn't great cinema, or even a movie you'll remember four hours later, but as stupid thrill rides go, it's smart enough to show you a good time.
Slant Magazine
Calum Marsh
Relates more or less the same story as Spy Kids, though in this case the kid is in his late 20s and the spy stuff is much less believable or robust.
