The Campaign Ratings & Reviews

I just watched The Campaign and I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. This movie is absolutely hilarious and one of the funniest political comedies I have ever seen. It takes all the chaos and ridiculousness of American politics and turns it into a nonstop laugh fest. The story follows two guys going head to head in a small town congressional race that quickly spirals into complete madness. One is a long time congressman who thinks he is untouchable and the other is a quiet local guy who suddenly finds himself thrown into the spotlight. What starts as a regular campaign quickly turns into a battle full of outrageous ads insults and wild antics. Will Ferrell is amazing in this movie. He plays Cam Brady the arrogant slick talking politician who will say or do anything to win. Ferrell goes all in with his performance making every line funnier than the last. He has that perfect mix of overconfidence and cluelessness that makes him hilarious to watch. Zach Galifianakis is just as good as Marty Huggins. He plays the soft spoken and awkward challenger who ends up being way more competitive than anyone expects. The way he transforms throughout the movie is both funny and surprisingly entertaining. The scenes with him and Ferrell are comedy gold. Their chemistry is what makes this movie work so well. The humor in The Campaign is completely over the top. It is full of insane situations crazy campaign tactics and jokes that push the limit. Some of the stuff they do to each other in the movie is so ridiculous you cannot help but laugh. The political ads the debates and the back and forth insults are some of the best parts. What makes this movie even better is how it manages to feel both completely absurd and strangely accurate. Even though everything is exaggerated the way it mocks political campaigns and how candidates act feels pretty real. It is satire but it is also kind of a commentary on how crazy real elections can get. The pacing is fast and the jokes never slow down. Every scene brings something new and funny whether it is a campaign stunt gone wrong or just another ridiculous attempt to one up the other. There is barely any filler and it keeps the laughs coming from beginning to end. The reason I am giving it 4.5 instead of a full 5 is because while it is super funny there are a few moments where it goes a little too far just for shock value. Some jokes land perfectly but others feel like they are just trying to be edgy for the sake of it. Still most of the humor hits and it does not ruin the experience. The supporting cast is solid too. There are a lot of great small roles and cameos that add to the craziness. The two main characters carry the movie but everyone else brings in a little extra chaos to make things even funnier. Overall The Campaign is a ridiculous hilarious political comedy that never holds back. If you are a fan of Will Ferrell or Zach Galifianakis you will love this. It is full of wild moments clever jokes and nonstop laughs. I had a blast watching it and I will definitely be watching it again.

What these dog days of political campaigning needs is a good, sharp political satire. Alas, The Campaign is not that movie -- not even close.
New York Post
Kyle Smith
This movie is single-handedly causing a major rise in our mirth deficit. It's so bad, I'm declaring a laugh emergency.

Leonard Maltin
The Campaign has a lot of genuine laughs. Too bad it doesn't have enough to carry it over the finish line, a mere 85 minutes after it begins.
Detroit News
Adam Graham
It's an average Will Ferrell comedy, nothing more.
The New Yorker
Bruce Diones
Despite the obviousness of its political points, the film has a scattershot, breezy appeal.
Salon.com
Andrew O'Hehir
Simply taken as a broad character comedy, "The Campaign" definitely has its moments.
Newsday
Rafer Guzman
This big, broad, laugh-out-loud farce isn't in the business of deep swipes or sharp insights. Its main message is that politics pretty much makes fun of itself.
USA Today
Claudia Puig
Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis trade barbs and sling mud, but the humor is inconsistent and the political satire lacks bite.
Wall Street Journal
Joe Morgenstern
Maybe the surreal realities of the current campaign really are beyond satire, ridicule, parody or ready comprehension, but this ultimately puerile gagfest has little reach and less grasp.
NPR
Scott Tobias
Both funny and undisciplined, a political satire that works best when the commentary sags and the crass absurdism escalates.
Los Angeles Times
Kenneth Turan
This cynical and funny film hits more often than it misses.
New York Times
A.O. Scott
It's like a sober, centrist, irrelevant op-ed column, but with bad words and belly laughs.
Washington Post
Ann Hornaday
Prefers silly, outre jokes and sight gags to a truly penetrating critique of partisan politics that has gone hopelessly off the rails.
TheWrap
Alonso Duralde
Often brings the laughs, but the movie's ultimate timidity over possibly vexing viewers of any political stripe renders the whole project somewhat sterile.
San Francisco Chronicle
Amy Biancolli
Raucous in its send-ups of the moral, financial and sexual peccadilloes of the common political animal.
Beliefnet
Nell Minow
This is one of those campaigns when you wish the ballot had an option for "none of the above."
New York Daily News
Joe Neumaier
A very funny satire that successfully calls out every moronic (and oxymoronic) part of our slogan-slinging, attack-ad-making election process.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Steven Rea
The Campaign is intermittently amusing, but more often just interminable.
