I streamed it, I logged it and I still don’t trust cockroaches. Directed by Takashi Miike, this live action adaptation of the manga throws 21st century scientists onto Mars with a plan: seed it with algae and cockroaches to terraform the planet. Fast forward 500 years and the first manned mission discovers those cockroaches have evolved into hulking, humanoid monsters with a serious grudge. Cue a second mission, genetically enhanced humans, and a survival fight that’s equal parts bonkers and brutal. I streamed it and it felt like a fever dream. The cast is stacked with Japanese stars (Hideaki Ito, Emi Takei, Shun Oguri, Rinko Kikuchi), and Miike leans hard into the manga’s absurdity: insect DNA powers, grotesque transformations and fight scenes that swing between horror and camp. It’s messy, it’s loud and it’s exactly the kind of cult sci-fi you either embrace or run from. And yes, critics gave it an average 4.7/10. But I gave it something better: a full watch, logged in Plex and a spot in my library. Sometimes chaos deserves more than numbers. The effects are uneven, but the energy is undeniable. It’s part Starship Troopers, part Resident Evil and part “what did I just watch?” — which is exactly why it works as a late night Plex pick. Terra Formars is pure Miike madness, cockroaches, chao and cult sci-fi spectacle. I streamed it, I logged it and I’ll never look at Mars (or my kitchen floor) the same way again.
