I waste words trying to capture what Bogdanovich was able to accomplish here; "Targets" must be seen. The layers of allegory, social commentary and metatextual celebration of Karloff's career weave together in a way that feels almost like a time capsule if it wasn't so timeless. Mise-en-scene has a sense of hyperreality, muted tension that throbs in the film until the stark, impeccable climax. The understated performance of Tim O'Kelly captures a subtle derangement both disturbing and deeply human that I feel other films trying to explore spree killing doesn't even come close to. There is much to be said about the metanarrative between Bogdanovich and Karloff but O'Kelly is the true star who gives life to the new age of monster.

For most the film it seems like two separate plots, I guess that's kinda weird.

Experiencing "Targets" was akin to drifting along a lazy river ride. The journey unfolds at a gentle, meandering pace with a couple of little drops, culminating in a thrilling drop at the conclusion, exhilarating the entire experience. It's a testament to the power of skilled storytelling in film, illustrating how a masterful director can elevate the cinematic experience of even a low-budget movie.
