Superhero Movie Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel Frangis4d agoI just watched Superhero Movie again and I would give it 2.5 out of 5 stars. This is exactly what you expect from a mid 2000s parody movie. It has some funny moments and a few clever jokes but a lot of it is hit or miss with more misses than hits. If you enjoy dumb over the top comedy this might be worth a watch but it does not do much beyond that. The story is a parody of Spider Man and other superhero movies from the early 2000s. It follows Rick Riker a nerdy high school student who gets bitten by a genetically altered dragonfly giving him superpowers. From there the movie throws in every superhero cliché possible while making fun of classic comic book tropes. Drake Bell plays Rick Riker and does a decent job with what he is given. He has good comedic timing and commits to the absurdity of the role but the writing does not give him much to work with. His character is basically a watered down version of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker without much personality beyond being awkward. Christopher McDonald as the villain is actually one of the better parts of the movie. He fully embraces the ridiculousness of the role and has some of the funniest moments. His performance feels like a mix of Norman Osborn from Spider Man and classic over the top supervillains which works well for a parody like this. The humor is all over the place. Some jokes land really well and are genuinely funny while others fall flat or feel like they are trying way too hard. The movie relies a lot on slapstick humor gross out gags and references to other superhero movies. Some of the visual comedy works but a lot of the jokes feel outdated or forced. One of the biggest issues with Superhero Movie is that it does not fully commit to being a smart parody. Movies like Scary Movie worked because they cleverly mocked horror tropes while still telling a fun story. This one feels more like a collection of random gags that do not always fit together. Some moments are funny but others feel like filler just to stretch out the runtime. The pacing is fast and chaotic which is both good and bad. It never slows down or drags but at the same time it does not give any joke time to breathe. If a joke does not land the movie has already moved on to the next one before you even have time to react. The special effects and action scenes are intentionally bad which works for a parody. The way they exaggerate superhero moments from movies like Spider Man and X Men is fun at times but it does not always hit as well as it could have. One of the biggest problems is that the movie does not have a lot of memorable moments. There are a few standout scenes but overall it just feels like another generic parody movie from this era. It has its funny parts but nothing that makes it stand out compared to better parody films. Overall Superhero Movie is a dumb fun comedy that has some laughs but is mostly forgettable. It is not terrible but it is not great either. If you are in the mood for a goofy parody and do not expect much it can be entertaining but it is not something you need to rush to watch. I had a few laughs but it is not a movie I would go out of my way to see again.
