In isolation, it's a fun movie with likeable actors, which (at the time) was successful with both audiences and critics in its goal of overcoming the perceived damage the Prequels had done to the franchise and gently rebooting Star Wars. But it also did so by taking a very conservative approach to its storytelling and world-building. And at the time, my concern was that the rest of the trilogy would follow the same unoriginal, cliché-ridden approach. Rey, a proxy for Luke with an unrevealed lineage, Luke in the role of wise master Obi-Wan/Yoda, Snoke as a clone of Palpatine (at the time only figurative), Kylo practically begging for the chance to betray his master and be redeemed in the final film, a la Vader, etc. There seemed to be a predictable, cliché-ridden path ahead, with very little to say. That's why I was so happy when TLJ took the turn I wanted. Rey wasn't really related to anyone, Luke's story was one of learning more than teaching, Snoke was eliminated as a possible big villain, Kylo ended the movie as the main antagonist, and the Aftermaths seemingly couldn't trudge back into the narrative structure of the Original Trilogy. All in a film that was thematically richer than TFA. And since I liked those decisions in TLJ, then I had fewer problems with the more conservative approach TFA had taken. Because instead of its lack of originality being a problem, it was just a setup for the surprises I liked in the next film. However, if I hadn't liked TLJ (as many here don't), then I'm not sure I'd feel as positive about TFA. Because even then, not liking how TROS ended the ST made the previous two films feel less satisfying than they had been before.
