Star Trek: The Motion Picture Ratings & Reviews
TotemSP2
March 3, 2025
It's long, and it feels longer, but when you're looking for some high concept science fiction to escape to for a couple of hours, there's nothing like taking a trip on the 'sorta' new enterprise, and getting lost in a... inexplicably large thing beyond your reckoning. Not the best Star Trek movie, but it's respectable.
The Hollywood Reporter
Arthur Knight
No mistake about it, Star Trek is a big movie - big in scope, big in spectacle and, most important, big in entertainment values.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
Science fiction is about ideas as much as about action, which is why this talky drama is a worthy entry.
San Francisco Examiner
Bill Mandel
This time, the producers went out and spent $42 million on the thing, so the scale is immense. The basic themes that made the series so popular remain, standing like diamond spines inside the vast new structure: It's still very much Star Trek in there.
Gone With The Twins
Mike Massie
The special effects aren't bad for the late '70s, but they're not pushed far enough to surpass peers.
Bay Area Reporter
Michael Lasky
There is no substance to this bloated project.
Zaki's Corner
Zaki Hasan
The first earnest attempt to foster large scale public interest in a moribund property that had survived up to that point solely on the enthusiasm of its small, devoted following.
Washington Post
Judith Martin
There are only so many ways to photograph black starry space and the under-bellies of spaceships, and the films that got there first used them all up.
Los Angeles Times
Charles Champlin
What you see is what you respond to, and what you see is a unique cultural phenomenon, and a film that for all its visual splendors falls well short of its aspirations.
New York Daily News
Kathleen Carroll
Not so much a movie as it is a sort of giant display case ...
Antagony & Ecstasy
Tim Brayton
Merely a weak, inapt Star Trek movie, not a completely awful one.
Common Sense Media
Charles Cassady
The Enterprise's first feature, with smarts outdoing guns.
Three Movie Buffs
Scott Nash
Star Trek's freshman big screen effort was crippled by a plodding pace and a somber tone.
Movie Metropolis
John J. Puccio
More of an event than a movie...more flash than content.
TIME Magazine
Richard Schickel
Nothing but a long day's journey into ennui.

If the endless interstellar vistas of 2001: A Space Odyssey tested your patience, Star Trek: The Motion Picture will make you cry like a little star child.
Variety
Variety Staff
The expensive effects (under supervision of Douglas Trumbull) are the secret of this film, and the amazing wizardry throughout would appear to justify the whopping budget.
TV Guide
Director Robert Wise has no feeling for Trek's pop insouciance, and the movie unfolds ponderously.
Chicago Reader
Dave Kehr
This 1979 movie adaptation of the cult TV series is blandness raised to an epic scale.
New York Times
Vincent Canby
[It's] like attending your high-school class's 10th reunion at Caesar's Palace. Most of the faces are familiar, but the dcor has little relationship to anything you've ever seen before.
