Stand by Me Ratings & Reviews
- Tubeman725d agoThe name Stephen King is synonymous with “The Shining,” “It,” “Carrie” and dozens of other horror stories. Yet this American writer has more to his name than just scary stories. He has also written beautiful literary works, a number of which have been made into films. 'Stand by Me' is one of these films – a realistic youth drama about the friendship of four young teenagers and the loss of their innocence during a summer holiday in 1958. The story revolves around four friends Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern who grow up together in a small American town in the state of Oregon. When in the summer of 1958 a boy from the same town has been missing for a long time and the four boys hear through the grapevine where his body might be, they decide to go on a search. During this quest, the four get to know each other even better and are also confronted with their lesser qualities. Ultimately, it turns out that the search has yielded something much more valuable than finding a missing boy: a close friendship and a step towards adulthood. With his film, director Rob Reiner knows how to portray the lives of small-town American kids in the 1950s very well. The world was different, more carefree. The four teenagers have their whole lives ahead of them and have no idea what is going on in the big bad world outside their town. This carefree atmosphere makes you as a viewer long for the innocence of your childhood; to a world where things were much simpler, where a search miles outside your village is already a true adventure. Child actors are a well-known phenomenon in Hollywood. It's funny to see what becomes of these actors. Of the four main actors, Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Connell, the latter has become the most famous, with roles in television series such as 'Sliders' and 'Las Vegas'. The fact that River Phoenix died too early (the actor died of an overdose in 1993) cannot be emphasized enough. 'Stand by Me' is his second feature film, shot when he was only sixteen years old. In the film he manages to portray a problem boy in a very convincing way who is angry at everything and everyone. Not much came of either Wheaton or Feldman; both have played various roles in television series, but their big break never really came. Perhaps the actors individually (except for Phoenix) did not have much to offer on the big screen, but the fact is that combining the four in 'Stand by Me' was an excellent choice by Reiner. All convince in their roles and it is moving to see how these four completely different characters come together at the end of the film. Simple dialogues by young teenagers, a beautiful story that makes you want to wander back to your youth and excellent acting make 'Stand by Me' a fantastic film that is very worthwhile.

- damonf October 6, 2025"All right. Al right. Mickey's a mouse. Donald's a duck. Pluto's a dog. What's Goofy?" The finest coming of age movie of all time.
- yenralcDecember 27, 2025Timeless classic coming of age movie.
- Oʂɯαʅԃσ RσყҽƚƚDecember 18, 2025This film is a brilliant, well-acted masterpiece! What touched me the most was the late River Phoenix's acting, but all of the young actors performances were incredible. They are why you should see this film. 'Stand By Me' is not a bubblegum Disney film, nor a dry Hollywood film; it is a movie that captures childhood in a poignant, non-candy coated manner that is dead on.
- Dave vincentSeptember 1, 2025Fantastic old film
- Mister ArnMay 13, 2025"The Body" is one of my favorite Steven King stories and Rob Reiner does it justice as a movie. Wil Wheaton acting was so much better in this movie, than was on Star Trek.
