- James Saenz12 avril 2026“don’t you see? lightning can strike the same place twice.” in seventh grade, my pre-algebra teacher would only ever play neil diamond. her name was mrs. duerr, and she was obsessed. every day after the lesson as we did our work she would blast album after album. as christmas approached, she asked the class, “do y’all want to listen to neil diamond or christmas music?” we all screamed “CHRISTMAS MUSIC” thinking we finally had an out, only for her to grin mischievously as she pulled out neil diamond’s christmas album. by the end of the school year i’d memorized lyrics and melodies to hundreds of his songs because of this woman’s devotion. i don’t know if she made fans out of all of her students, but she definitely made one out of me. i have a deep fondness and appreciation for his music, and it’s thanks to her. the music is the best part of the film by virtue of being neil diamond’s. i like the visual sequences of claire’s drug-induced delirium and perception of lost time. the performances are all right; i love kate hudson, but i don’t know if this was an oscar nomination-worthy performance given the sheer number of incredible performances found in other films released in 2025. if i wanted to watch a film that revered neil diamond’s legacy i would much prefer to watch saving silverman— i have a better time with that movie and neil actually makes a cameo. p.s. i feel mike’s pain whenever people would only ever mention “sweet caroline” regarding neil diamond because that’s how i feel whenever people only mention “i miss you” when talking about blink-182. p.p.s. not me getting jump scared by king princess lmao what are you DOING HERE i know you just released an album in 2025 but girl get back in the studio!!

Milwaukee, Ohio, 1989. Mike, imitateur d'Elvis, fait la connaissance de Claire, une chanteuse de clubs abonnée au répertoire de Patsy Cline. Le coup de foudre réciproque amène cet alcoolique sobre et cette mère célibataire à former un groupe dédié au répertoire de Neil Diamond baptisé Lightning & Thunder. De kermesses locales en festivals, le duo est remarqué par Eddie Vedder, le leader du groupe Pearl Jam, qui l'invite à assurer la première partie de son spectacle à Milwaukee. Le triomphe qui s'ensuit est assombri par un terrible accident, qui coûte à Claire une de ses jambes, et plonge ces amoureux fous dans leur première crise de couple, sous l'œil impuissant de leurs enfants respectifs.
