I appreciated from the very beginning how Slow West refuses to indulge in mythology. John Maclean presents the West as a place where survival depends more on timing and luck than courage. Visually, the film is just as convincing, with New Zealand standing in for the nineteenth-century American frontier so seamlessly that I never questioned the setting for a moment. Just as importantly, the film refuses to reduce its outlaws, settlers, or Native Americans to stereotypes. Everyone is capable of compassion one moment and cruelty the next, making the world feel far closer to what I imagine the Old West actually looked like. Kodi Smit-McPhee's attempt at a Scottish accent certainly could have used some polishing, but it was simply a minor distraction in an otherwise engaging journey. As A24's first western, Slow West laid a confident foundation for the studio. The final shootout delivers everything you'd hope to see from a classic western showdown, yet John Maclean stages it entirely on the film's own terms. Rather than treating violence as something heroic, he lets the confrontation unfold with the same uncertainty that had defined the journey from the beginning. The film never abandons that melancholy outlook, either. Its closing moments refuse to manufacture hope where none belongs, staying faithful to the unforgiving world Maclean had spent the entire film creating. Michael Fassbender provides a steady presence throughout, and the lean eighty-four-minute runtime keeps the story moving without ever feeling rushed. I've never been someone who gravitates toward westerns, which made it all the more impressive that Slow West won me over. I admired how completely it committed to that grounded perspective from beginning to end, creating a frontier that feels more believable than the one depicted in most westerns.
