The film operates on a simple but effective premise: a malevolent alien parasite invades a small town, turning its inhabitants into grotesque, flesh-eating mutants. The resulting action is deliberately over-the-top, mixing creature feature tropes with dark humour that is distinctly James Gunn's style, and it's a style that works perfectly for this sort of project. The energy and charm of the movie are largely due to its great cast. Nathan Fillion is the standout, delivering a charismatic and natural performance as the small-town sheriff trying to maintain order. His deadpan delivery amidst the escalating absurdity is a major highlight. He's backed by Michael Rooker and Elizabeth Banks, who both deliver solid, committed performances as a couple caught in the middle of the alien infestation. Ultimately, Slither doesn't go beyond what it is: a silly little movie and a time-killer. It is a bloody, disgusting, and funny throwback to the creature features of the 1980s. For those who enjoy their horror served with a generous helping of slime and absurdity, this is a supremely entertaining and satisfying watch.
