Sleepers Ratings & Reviews

It's a great movie about friendship. It also exposed some physical, verbal and sexual abuse of those poor helpless boys under the abusive power tripping of some guards. Joseph Perrino and Brad Renfro performed here so exquisitely. It's nice to see that Brad Renfro made a lot of good movies for us to remember him and his talent. Actor Ron Eldard also did well in this movie.
Movie Metropolis
John J. Puccio
...it's more than a bit disconcerting to see how the narrative makes serious wrongdoers sympathetic. Therefore, a qualified success.
Groucho Reviews
Peter Canavese
Despite it all, just try to take your eyes off this movie: skillfully crafted by Levinson, Sleepers is eminently watchable, deeply emotional, and populated with top acting talent. [Blu-ray]
Common Sense Media
Carly Kocurek
Powerful story of child abuse. Not for kids.
Newsweek
David Ansen
The problems start with Levinson's script, which overemploys Patric's florid narration to tell you what you're about to see, what it means and how you should feel about it.
New York Times
Janet Maslin
''Sleepers'' has become a big Hollywood movie with a slick, shrewd manner that perfectly mirrors Mr. Carcaterra's writing style.
EmanuelLevy.Com
Emanuel Levy
Boasting a glorious multi-generational cast (De Niro, Hoffman, Brad Pitt, Jason Patric), Levinson's tale of sexual abuse and revenge is just decent, lacking dramatic energy and relying too much on voice-over narration and conventional courtroom procedures
TIME Magazine
Richard Schickel
It is all legally preposterous. But Levinson is a slick craftsman, his actors are insinuatingly real, and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus casts a disarmingly believable light on these proceedings.
BDK Reviews
Kevin McCarthy
One thing you will not being doing after seeing this dark, yet beautifully written film, is sleeping.
Variety
David Stratton
If audiences aren't bothered by this disturbing subtext, there's a lot to enjoy in this impeccably structured, handsomely produced saga.
Lawrence Journal-World
Jon Niccum
Disturbing and powerful
San Francisco Chronicle
Peter Stack
At times the images are agonizing to behold, men in their most desperate, hateful depths preying on children. The film, exceptional on many counts, ultimately is sad in a hopeless, haunting way.
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers
Idealized? You bet. That's why the loss of this world must be avenged with the same broad strokes that you'd expect from the Count of Monte Cristo.
Los Angeles Times
Kenneth Turan
In craft terms alone, Sleepers is considerably better than average filmmaking, but it's difficult to take this film as seriously as it takes itself.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
As entertainment, the movie functions successfully. But I don't believe the story is true -- not true to the facts, and not true to the morality it pretends to be about.
Austin Chronicle
Steve Davis
What a more interesting film this would have been had Levinson found a way to integrate the past and the present so that one informed the other. As constructed, however, he's made a lopsided movie.
USA Today
Engrosses if it doesn't fully convince.
