Sinners Ratings & Reviews
- COCO4d agoWe’re only in April and I’m afraid this already might be movie of the year.
- PatrikStar11h agoYep, we’ve got a certified banger on our hands PEAK cinema right here! See it in theatres. Or the vampires will find you.
- Nirupam11h agoThere's a scene in this film that I think, in ten or so years, younger up-and-coming filmmakers of that time will cite as the thing that inspired them to become filmmakers. I got goosebumps.
- Kit Lazer12h agoIt’s a horror movie about vampires in the American South, 1932, but that’s all just set dressing. It’s such an intoxicating blend of genres, a movie that is a melting pot just like the cultural heritage this movie explores. A lot of times when one actor plays two characters in a movie, it’s neat but the performances suffer, it feels like a gimmick, but Michael B. Jordan is able make Smoke and Stack feel like two distinct, living, breathing people. It’s part crime-thriller, there’s a dash of a coming-of-age story, drama, romance, notes of a musical, it’s a stew packed with spices, and the horror simmers and simmers before coming to a rolling boil, kinda like FROM DUSK TIL DAWN. I would have watched four hours of this. I want more. It’s gorgeous, you’ve gotta see it on the biggest screen possible to appreciate the scope, the aspect ratio changes – the Cinematographer was Autumn Arkapaw, one of far too few women in charge of the camera. The sound track is alive, it’s the main character, the pulse of the movie but the score, by Ludwig Göransson who just won an Oscar for composing OPPENHEIMER and won previously for composing BLACK PANTHER, is the fangs always lurking underneath. There’s so much subtext to sink your teeth into here, the way Coogler brings in Asian immigrants, the Irish, Indigenous People – and makes it a story about all of these hardworking people, the people who bulit the real America just trying to cut loose, be free. What does freedom look like? Drinking deep, playing cards, singing from the gut about things you can’t explain you just know, dancing until you sweat; and sex, desire, can’t forget that, the writhing pulsing primal urges. But the powers that be warn all who have toiled and suffered under the sun all day to make them safe and rich that any who engage in this wanton abandon are SINNERS. They say, "Yes, you’ve worked our fields, yes, you’ve fought our wars overseas but don’t you dare sing and dance and be merry on this land you’ve bled for." Go see Sinners. Trust me, you’ve earned it.
- Alex | Pop Culture Brain12h agoThis is exactly what movie fans having been waiting for and exactly what Hollywood should be making for them I saw Sinners so here's the good And the one tiny flaw that was probably intentional anyway Look, I’m not going to be the first or last person to tell you this movie is amazing This movie is amazing. There simply aren’t enough superlatives to throw at it It is the best movie of the year so far and I don’t think there’s a close second With Sinners, Writer director Ryan Coogler has created a powerful, provocative, promiscuous and profound vampire sand music horror film for the ages That’s not only a bloody riot that’s about as entertaining as movies can get But it’s also deeply emotional, richly detailed, and socially awake The closest comparison is Get Out Coogler is examining and probing real societal issues around race and cultural appropriation Specifically how the blues were co-opted by mainstream American culture But he’s doing all that through a wickedly engaging genre package. That is also an excellent and surprising vampire movie We don’t get smart and challenging blockbusters too often, but the world would be a better place if we did OK what about the writing, filmmaking, and acting? All top notch Coogler’s script follows a familiar structure, but he takes his time building the world and fleshing out the characters - before he unleashes hell Some may find that slow build well, slow, but to me it made the overall experience so much richer Then down the line, every department brought their A game There are sweeping oners and beautiful magic hour photography The production design and costumes are specific and lived in Ludwig Goransson’s music, plus all of the songs, were effective and transporting There’s one musical number specifically that is bound to become iconic And from top to bottom the cast is outstanding - but I’ll give special shoutouts to Michael B Jordan in two roles, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li And of course newcomer Miles Caton - this is his first movie and he is a revelation My one tiny nitpick is that I found one big action scene to be too chaotic - to the point where I couldn’t follow what was happening to whom It’s possible Coogler wanted to disorient the audience in that moment though, so I’ll take it in stride The highest praise I can give this movie is my sunglasses fell out of my pocket at some point during the film And I was so engrossed in the movie I didn’t even notice they were gone until I was halfway to my car Anyway, if you love bold original and entertaining filmmaking, led by auteurs who actually have something to say Go see this Sinners in theaters, if only to tell Hollywood - hey we want more stuff like this
