Martin Scorsese's passion project is finally here and man is it deep. This film raises very intriguing questions and sends the viewer right along with are padres for the torturous journey. This movie made it official, Andrew Garfield is a fantastic actor. The emotional depths and complexity to his character are spellbinding. Everyone else turns in great performances as well. The film is absolute gorgeous. What the cinematography is able to do inside claustrophobic rooms is impressive. The film is slow but that is necessary for the picture. I was moved by this and find myself thinking about the movie hours later.
MTV
Amy Nicholson
Scorsese doesn't glorify martyrdom, and he doesn't even hate the killers. He makes death as blunt and dull and useless as a snapped pencil. The point is that there is no point.
Christian Science Monitor
Peter Rainer
Alternately powerful and somnolent.
Detroit News
Adam Graham
For those not exulted by the inner-workings of devotion, it's a slog.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Calvin Wilson
This may not be Scorsese's best film, but it's unquestionably his most impassioned.
Chicago Reader
Tal Rosenberg
The film can be ponderous in its rumination and ambiguity, but few cinematic treatments of Christianity and sanctity have been as generous or as intellectually challenging as Silence.
Chicago Sun-Times
Richard Roeper
What beauty. What brutality. What madness.
Baltimore Magazine
Max Weiss
Not all so-called passion projects are able to convey actual passion on screen. This one does. Silence feels like both an ardent reaffirmation of faith and a lonely cry out to God in the dark.
MovieFreak.com
Sara Michelle Fetters
Silence is a troubling, emotion-fueled enigma, and only through additional viewings do I believe an understanding of what it is Scorsese is attempting to say will ever be determined.
Movie Mom
Nell Minow
This movie about silence is at its best in the verbal jousting on faith, culture, truth, and power.
The Atlantic
Christopher Orr
Scorsese's abiding passion and respect for his source material are everywhere in evidence. For once, perhaps, they are a little too great.
Seattle Times
Soren Andersen
The very nature of belief itself is at the heart of "Silence."
Arizona Republic
Bill Goodykoontz
There is a fair amount of repetition here, and the film is too long (two hours and 41 minutes). But it is also gorgeous, stunningly so, and powerful.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
It's a strange case, a movie about spiritual doubt that unintentionally provokes spiritual doubt. "Silence" is just ugly and drab, with not a hint of the transcendent about it.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Tirdad Derakhshani
Scorsese's adaptation is overlong and at times insufferably self-indulgent but contains sublime moments of transcendent beauty and a wealth of beautiful performances.
Austin Chronicle
Marjorie Baumgarten
Silence is Scorsese's mode of sharing the Holy Communion. To that, every cinephile will say, "Amen."
Washington Post
Michael O'Sullivan
It sure takes [Scorsese] long enough to drive [his] point home - putting the film's audience through its own kind of torture - but the morale of his story is ultimately both tough and nuanced.
Boston Globe
Ty Burr
As a work of craft, "Silence" is unparalleled. As a work of spirit, it aches with sincerity. As a work of art, it feels as though it hasn't fully left its maker's head.
Chicago Tribune
Michael Phillips
Scorsese has lived with his love of this material for a long time. Maybe too long.
The New Yorker
Richard Brody
"Silence" is only a near-great film, one in which the very power of its subject-and of Scorsese's devotion to it-appears largely to restrain his distinctive artistry.
