Se7en Ratings & Reviews
- Tubeman725d agoSometimes there are films that set a trend. 'Se7en' (1995) is one of them. This dark, cleverly conceived thriller about a mysterious serial killer by David Fincher made such an impression that many similar films soon followed. Each one is inferior to one of the masterpieces of the nineties, 'Se7en'. The strength of the film lies mainly in the fact that the perpetrator is not so much sought after. No, the strong point is that Fincher holds a mirror up to his viewers. Because 'Se7en' is mainly about the sins in the world. And we are all guilty of that, to a greater or lesser extent. The story of 'Se7en' was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, who worked as a cashier in a record store before the film brought him great success. Walker draws a remarkable comparison between murder and the creation of art. 'Se7en' revolves around detectives William Somerset and David Mills. Somerset is about to retire and in his final week will be tasked with initiating newcomer Mills into the trade. Their vision of their work as a detective – and of the world – is quite different; young Mills is energetic and aggressive and focused solely on catching criminals. The thoughtful, experienced and well-read Somerset attaches much more value to the process of searching for traces and collecting evidence. The serial killer that both have to chase selects his victims in a very special way; based on the seven deadly sins (gluttony, greed, laziness, lust, vanity, envy and anger) that they have committed. With his murders, the perpetrator, John Doe, hopes to preach a message to what he sees as a fallen world full of sins to which we close our eyes. It's up to Mills and Somerset to stop this bloody, sadistic game. The differences between the two detectives may be somewhat exaggerated, but they ensure that the gentlemen complement each other. To point out the difference: Somerset thinks the solution to the murders can be found in the library and struggles through Chaucer, Milton and Dante. Mills thinks that is too much work and limits himself to reading the summaries. But when doors need to be broken down, Mills stands his ground. Both Pitt and Freeman are good in their roles, although there are moments when the former is completely outplayed by his older colleague, who was given wise, almost poetic words by Walker. The supporting roles are also performed wonderfully, although the role of Mills' wife Tracy could perhaps have been developed a little more when they signed top actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Now the viewer sees little of what she has to offer. Kevin Spacey steals the show in the film's final chord, which is as horrifying as it is unsurpassedly brilliant. Not only the script and the acting are excellent. The dark, sad atmosphere of the film is crucial to the effect. For example, it almost always rains and many dark shadows are used to further emphasize the grim atmosphere. The special role of the murderer, a disturbed but eloquent man with a well-thought-out plan for which there is something to be said, is also different from other films. Not to mention the apotheosis of the film, which will remain with the viewer for a long time. Together with 'The Usual Suspects' (1995) and 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1991), 'Se7en' forms an illustrious trio of unforgettable thrillers from the nineties that every film lover must see!
- The Gutter MonkeyOctober 17, 2024A quintessential Gen X noir, merging a detective narrative with the aesthetic of a grimy Trent Reznor music video.
- Gene CapmanAugust 19, 2025I've seen this multiple times and the final act never ceases to punch me in the gut. Brilliant film.
- ben stevensonOctober 5, 2025One of the best crime thrillers out there.
- tellumAugust 17, 2025A movie so brutal that it doesn’t care your mental health will decline from watching it.
- fear32December 3, 2025Objectively, one of the best movies ever made. Subjectively, the best movie ever made.
- PaulNovember 7, 2025Se7en is pure urban nightmare. David Fincher serves up a city so overpopulated and soulless it’s barely fit for human habitation. Riddled with crime, rain-soaked and anonymous, the city is as much a villain as the killer. Brad Pitt’s Mills and Morgan Freeman’s Somerset clash with the environment and each other, one young, bristling with hope, the other ground down by years of loneliness and horror. What bites hardest about Se7en isn’t just the gruesome crimes or infamous ending, but the film’s unspoken truth: the film’s tension and nihilism leave you thinking, maybe city living is the real sin. Grim, smart, and never less than riveting, Se7en stands out as a modern-day horror story and a warning shot at the dark side of civilisation.

- Örn LúðvíkssonOctober 28, 2025This is a masterpiece. Not for the faint hearted.
- RichardOctober 19, 2025Saw this one in the cinema when it came out and it left a mark. Not just because of the ending (which still punches like a freight train), but because it felt like a shift in how crime thrillers could look, feel and haunt. Later picked it up on DVD and it’s one of those I revisit when I want atmosphere so thick you could slice it with a box cutter. David Fincher directs with surgical precision, rain-soaked streets, flickering neon and a city that feels like it’s rotting from the inside. Morgan Freeman is the weary intellectual, Brad Pitt the impulsive rookie and Kevin Spacey… well, let’s just say his performance is unforgettable, even if his legacy isn’t. The concept is chilling: a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as a blueprint. Each crime scene is a grotesque tableau, each clue a philosophical jab. The pacing is deliberate, the tension constant and the final act? Iconic. It could’ve become more, a trilogy, a deeper dive into Somerset’s past, or even a spiritual sequel. But maybe it’s better as a standalone. One perfect storm of dread, decay, and despair. I loved the tone, the performances and the way it made adult years feel grim, introspective and cinematically shaken.
- Johan PotgieterOctober 12, 2025What a great movie. This was not my first watch but definitely worth it, even if you kind of remember what's about to happen. Great story, great cast. I even suspended my hate for Gwyneth Paltrow for the duration of the movie. Top 5 of all time in my opinion.
- Derek StevensonSeptember 13, 2025Great movie
