- NiztradamusAugust 28, 2025Alright but run of the mill paranormal horror movie. Nothing special but not bad. None of the scares actually hit home sadly but it's fine for what it is.
- jackmeatNovember 9, 2025My quick rating - 6.9/10. This and its sequel have made "best of" horror lists for their respective years, so I am going to check them out finally. Reading subtitles is a hassle with my eyes as of late, so I procrastinate. Very atmospheric with the camerawork and lack of sound at the right time to really suck you in for the scares. The family is torn apart initially when the mother passes away mysteriously to start this one. But there seems to be far more going on than just an isolated, depressing occurrence. It doesn't take long for strange things to begin happening that make everyone think they are not alone in their home anymore. The haunted house genre needed a good jolt to remind us of how great it can be, and Joko Anwar has definitely done it. Indonesia has brought us some pretty creepy horror in the past, so it isn't surprising to see more good stuff arriving. The atmosphere is so chilling throughout, and even if it builds slowly, it still feels very tense the whole time. Their house is right next to a cemetery in Jakarta, and as if that isn't creepy enough, they are all good with burying their own dead right there. The cast is outstanding in this flick from top to bottom, although I don't know the language and had to deal with subtitles, which may have hindered the effectiveness in translation at times. Still, a highly recommended horror flick for any fans of the genre since it is a fresh take on a tried and true horror staple, and the haunted house genre needed a shot in the arm. Side note: Since viewing these, I have run across the fact that it is a remake of a 1982 movie of the same name, so I grabbed that and will have to see how it compares.
- Patrick WaiOctober 7, 2025This movie would've scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Great atmosphere, looks exactly like it was shot in the 70s. Unfortunately as an adult I find it a bit too predictable, plus I hate it when the characters act dumb. Their house must have both easiest doors to break down AND toughest doors the family members get locked behind.
- KezzzOctober 3, 2025This film had some really nice scares which weren’t over the top or too often. It set the tone right from the start which led up to an okay finale. The ending however does leave us with sequel in mind and does not conclude the story here. Recommended to those who enjoy western horror such as the conjuring but offers up a little bit more of the creeps.
