Chilling look at notions of justice and communal tensions in India. Good acting. Decent script.

Santosh is a gripping and powerful police procedural that exposes the harsh realities of corruption, casteism, and misogyny in rural India. Its neo-noir sensibilities and strong performances make for an arresting debut from director Sandhya Suri. The Good: The film's greatest strength is its unflinching look at systemic injustice. It's a masterclass in subtlety, using the central murder mystery as a vehicle to explore deeper themes. Shahana Goswami's lead performance is captivating, conveying Santosh's journey from a naive widow to a hardened cop with quiet intensity. The cinematography creates a stark, realistic atmosphere that fully immerses the viewer. The Bad: While powerful, the film's pacing can be slow for some viewers, with its deliberate burn feeling more like a study than a traditional thriller. The narrative relies on a number of genre tropes, which, while used effectively to build tension, can feel a bit too familiar at times. The supporting characters, while well-acted, occasionally feel underdeveloped, serving more as archetypes than fully realized individuals. Santosh is a compelling and thought-provoking film that uses a classic crime story to deliver a potent social commentary. It’s a must-watch for anyone who appreciates cinema that is both cinematically beautiful and socially relevant.

When her constable husband is killed in the line of duty, Santosh Saini (Shahana Goswami) is given the rare opportunity to step into his role and receive a widow’s pension, sparing her from the bleak prospects typically faced by widows in a patriarchal society. Taking the job is both a lifeline and a challenge, as Santosh enters a male-dominated system where justice is often skewed by corruption, casteism, and entrenched misogyny. Under the mentorship of the seasoned Inspector Sharma (Sunita Rajwar), Santosh begins to find her footing and a sense of empowerment. However, as she delves deeper into her duties, she becomes painfully aware of how the system perpetuates inequality, often favoring the upper castes and the powerful at the expense of true justice. Both Goswani and Rajwar deliver outstanding performances, particularly Rajwar who has a quite nuanced character. This nuance is most evidenced by the climactic conversation between Santosh and Sharma, as Sharma sort of lays bare her pragmatic view of surviving within a corrupt system. That scene stuck with me.
