- Take Alan Ritchson (the *Reacher* giant), pair him with Owen Wilson, and unleash a criminal cartel led by a cynical Rodrigo Santoro against them. That is exactly what this is: a 98-minute shot of pure adrenaline where the laws of physics are treated as optional. The plot is incredibly simple, but director Scott Waugh (a former stuntman) transforms an urgent medical transport mission into a wild, spectacular high-speed chase. Action fans will go crazy for the breakneck pace and the brawls; even skeptics who might roll their eyes at the clichés will still enjoy the banter and the excellent chemistry between this "odd couple." It won’t win an Oscar for its screenplay, but as a source of popcorn entertainment, it definitely makes the grade.
- Alan was great and brings his Reacher persona to this movie while Owen Wilson plays himself and I realized I'm just not a fan of that and find him annoying. The action was good and over the top but didn't have any real life likel effects to them. The writing and directing were bad and just didn't make sense at times. (Shootout going on but everyone is acting like it's normal? this is Australia not America) Fun movie that I didn't regret watching.
- 🏃🏻♀️➡️🧰🏃🏻♀️➡️🏥 Runner ticks all the boxes. Acting, story, cinematography, sound design, message. Owen Wilson has never been easier, more natural, comfortable and honest. His character is annoying, charming, believable and someone you come to love. Ritchson brings nuance and texture to his role in a surprisingly subtle way, for a film so reliant on action. The relationships established throughout are interesting, complex and fully fleshed out. The story is simple: get something precious to the hospital by 5PM -- and then complications arise which engender the action, action, action. Some great camera work during these scenes. Some might say the action was larger than life, but what action movie isn't? Music was great, moving us from one scene to the next, and sound in general was awesome. Most importantly, the movie has a moral core, and regardless of cost, the heroism demanded to get that precious thing to the hospital is met. This is a terrific action film, but it's also a film with laughs, heart, and an important message. Go see it.
- Runner feels like an extended episode of Reacher, (complimentary). Alan Ritchson is perfectly at home and you can just see feel Angel Studios or Paramount slotting him into these action vehicles years, hoping to maybe put Jason Statham and Liam Neeson out of business. He’s certainly got an enormous on-screen presence. Owen Wilson’s character seems destined to be insufferable at first, but he’s got this uncanny charm that really sneaks up on you. Ritchson’s reaction to him mirrors my own…annoyed early on, but then gradually warming to his hokey energy. By the time they reached Ritchson’s ex’s house, the dynamic had settled into something surprisingly fun. Forgettable but decently fun.
- Alan Ritchson is a lot like Keanu Reeves - they can both only play themselves. I like seeing them in movies because their lack of acting skills actually keeps things consistent - I know exactly what I am in for. In the case of Ritchson - I expect watching Reacher and that is exactly what I am getting here. He is strong, he wins fights, people shoot at him, beat him up, stab him and he just walks it off. Is this a good movie? No - its plot is so mundane that I could have told you what happens before watching it and I would have been right. But if you happen to come back from work and just want to sit down, shut off your brain (that is a must here) and enjoy a mindless action movie, filled with clichés and action movie tropes - you might as well watch this one.
- Old school buddy action flick with some humor and some heart and serious violence dispersed in-between. Low budget but Brisbane / gold coast surroundings give it some great production value. Could do with replacing the de-riquer now to this kind of filmatism "oners" with better crafted and expertly cut action but the charm and chemistry of the leads makes up for any deficiencies.
- My quick rating - 6.7/10. Runner starts with a nice-looking oceanside shot of Brisbane, Australia, which immediately gives us the impression we're about to watch an everyday Australian thriller. Naturally, this lasts approximately five minutes. We meet Hank Malone, played by Alan Ritchson, sitting on a boat and attempting to learn French on his phone. Because apparently even action heroes have Duolingo streaks to maintain. He then hops into his truck and heads to an AA meeting to collect his one-year coin. Gotta give the main character some backstory. After another nagging call from Iggy, Hank gets his latest assignment and, most importantly, permission to "kick ass if necessary." He seems to specialize in odd delivery jobs, so I'm not entirely sure how much ass-kicking will actually be required. That changes pretty quickly when an urgent medical package comes his way with some serious money attached. Meanwhile, we meet Ben Bishop, played by Owen Wilson, relaxing on a private jet. We also meet Kate (Leila George), who is at the hospital with her daughter and discovers that a desperately needed organ is finally on the way. I think you see where this is going. Ben is the organ delivery guy. Hank is his delivery driver. Congratulations, you've got a buddy movie. Of course, transporting a liver across Australia couldn't possibly remain a simple delivery. Before long, we're dealing with cartel goons, a suspicious number of guns for a country where the biggest threat normally seems to be a kangaroo, and a surprising amount of foreign-language dialogue without subtitles. Then there are the Australian criminals, including bikers, which Aussies hilariously call bikies. Yes, bikies. Apparently even Australian organized crime gets its own adorable local terminology. The result is a pretty damn fun ride. Ritchson moves through every environment like the entire planet was specifically designed as a collection of weapons. A bike? Weapon. Car? Weapon. Wall? Probably weapon. Someone else's furniture? Give him thirty seconds. Owen Wilson brings his usual humor and recognizable mannerisms, which works well alongside Ritchson's increasingly violent delivery-service routine. I especially like how the movie treats transporting a liver through a criminal-infested Australia as though this is a perfectly reasonable Tuesday afternoon. There are no awards being handed out here, but action fans will get a damn good car chase through the Gold Coast and a violent-ass last fight. I thoroughly enjoyed Mayday, and Runner is right there with it for me. It's ridiculous, occasionally heartfelt, and just self-aware enough to make the whole thing work.
