My mom watched Kevin Costner movies regularly, and I grew up seeing this one over & over. I enjoyed it back then, and revisiting it as an adult didn't disappoint. If you liked the movie, the Director's cut is great -- it adds a couple useful Sheriff scenes that bring some clarity to a couple of the more cryptic scenes from the theatrical release. Held up well if you liked it, probably more annoying now if you didn't like it back then.

Struggles with its identity between a cheesy comedy and a sincere uprising movie at times. But it's still enjoyable.

For years, it felt like Robin Hood: Men in Tights was parodying this movie. In reality, it’s closer to a beat-for-beat remake. The opening scene was genuinely traumatic as a kid, and the fact that this film had that kind of impact at all is kind of astounding. Beyond that, the movie is wildly uneven and often incoherent. Very little makes sense, and almost none of it feels believable. Reading about the production only clarifies why: a director making decisions based on what he personally found funny, creative chaos behind the scenes, and Kevin Costner effectively shutting the director out of the edit. It’s no wonder the final product feels unrestrained and confused. The tonal whiplash is constant. Is this a drama? A romance? An action film? A comedy? It seems unsure from scene to scene. There’s no controlling vision, just momentum and money. How Kevin Reynolds went on to secure funding for Waterworld after this is genuinely baffling. And yet, the film is almost worth watching because of how strange it is. It feels like unchecked 80s excess colliding with early-90s modernism, a movie made at the exact moment studios believed scale could replace coherence. It’s honestly surprising there isn’t a Domino’s Pizza or Pepsi placement somewhere in Sherwood Forest.

    Perfect adventure movie

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is an energetic, often entertaining take on the classic legend, blending adventure, humour, and a now‑iconic soundtrack that still hits hard decades later. The film boasts a memorable supporting cast—Alan Rickman gleefully steals scenes with his over‑the‑top Sheriff of Nottingham, and the ensemble around him leans into the film’s larger‑than‑life tone with enthusiasm. But the biggest sticking point is Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood. While he brings sincerity, he never quite fits the role. The lack of an English accent is distracting, and his performance often feels oddly tentative, as if he’s still finding his footing. In a film filled with bold personalities, he comes across surprisingly muted. Despite that, the movie remains fun, fast‑paced, and packed with ’90s charm. It’s an uneven but enjoyable adventure—one carried as much by its style and supporting cast as by its legendary hero.

Really fun 90s adventure with big action, a great score, and loads of charm. Costner’s totally fine as Robin, but Alan Rickman is the clear MVP as the ridiculously entertaining Sheriff. A bit cheesy in the best way, and very easy to rewatch.

This is my favorite version of the Robin Hood legend. While it may not be a cinematic masterpiece, it's an incredibly fun watch, and as a fan of Costner, I appreciate the take—even though (or maybe because) he skips the accent. If you are at all interested in this movie, I strongly recommend seeking out the extended version. The theatrical cut confusingly removes key storylines and scenes that are necessary to fully understand the characters and plot; the extended cut makes the overall narrative much more coherent, albeit slightly longer. The theatrical release is still reasonable though.
