The Tokyo Trial began on May 3, 1946. It was the Asian equivalent of the Nuremberg Trials. Japanese leaders, allies of the Axis powers, were to be tried for war crimes and atrocities committed under their responsibility. After the horrors of World War II, the Allies wanted to establish a new democratic order. The Tokyo Trial stands out as a key moment in the history of international law. Judge Henri Bernard represented France at the trial. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a model of international justice became bogged down until 1948: endless translations, political tensions, disagreements between magistrates, and the growing shadow of the Cold War turned the trial into a farce.
