Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian's vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov -- and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.

  • If the upcoming sequel is even half as good as this one, then we're in for a decent 2nd film. I still have this on VHS 📼

Bullock and Kidman in their prime, clear tonality and women versus bad dudes is all right. I’m just not into witches and possessions.

A ton of small plot holes that all make you laugh as hard as the film (if not harder) Sappy and shitty. Not excited for the sequel ima begrudgingly see with my mom! Watched with my mom bc she loves Sandra Bullock (she is also named Sandra!)

Practical Magic is a charming, spellbinding blend of romance, comedy, and gentle darkness that only gets better with time. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman share irresistible sisterly chemistry, grounding the film’s magic in warmth, grief, and love. With its autumnal atmosphere, memorable soundtrack, and themes of family, fate, and choosing your own path, the film feels both cozy and quietly powerful. It’s a comforting, enchanting classic, that's perfect for anyone who believes a little magic makes life richer.
  • It is a very entertaining film, featuring brilliant performances from the main cast—especially Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. This engaging comedy is well worth checking out.

Stellar performance by the principals, but the overall production is uneven. It’s definitely a fun movie, but it falls short of its potential.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman at their cutest. What's a entertaining light comedy romance. Main reason I watched it is cuz after 38 years the sequel is coming out soon.

A fun modern fantasy romance romp. Back when we thought Sandra bullock was a better actor than Nicole Kidman. Love stockard Channing.

Practical Magic (1998) brings together an impressive cast, charming sets, and a promising premise, yet the film struggles to balance its tones. The strongest elements lie in the relationships between the Owens sisters, portrayed with warmth and authenticity by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Their bond grounds the story and gives emotional weight to themes of loss, resilience, and the lingering trauma of domestic violence. Unfortunately, the magical aspects—meant to add whimsy and mystery—often feel silly, disjointed, and at odds with the darker, more serious material. The inconsistent approach to magic undermines the film’s attempts at suspense and dilutes the impact of the family curse that drives the plot. While the production design and atmosphere are appealing, the uneven storytelling keeps the film from reaching its full potential. Practical Magic is heartfelt and engaging in parts, but its tonal imbalance ultimately holds it back.
