Ponyboi Ratings & Reviews

July 2, 2025
A neon-noir crime thriller that has Ponyboi, an intersex sex worker, on the run when a client keels over. Operating out of a laundromat run by Vinnie, a hyper-sleazy Dylan O’brien, Ponyboi resorts to stealing Vinnie’s cash stash, hops across grimy Jersey truckstops, motels and pharmacies, trying to find a way to get out of town. Writer/director/star River Gallo draws a lot from personal experience and it’s this insight into the intersex experience that the film shines brightest. The crime thriller elements are otherwise fairly generic and not very well fleshed out. There’s also a b-storyline where Ponyboi has recently discovered that their estranged father is on his deathbed and has been reaching out for contact. We’re treated to ethereal flashbacks to Ponyboi’s childhood as they grapple with the feelings of being discarded or abandoned. At the same time, the audience never really gets a window into what really happened in Ponyboi’s childhood—just an amorphous feeling that doesn’t completely close the distance between Ponyboi and the audience. By the end, I felt a little mixed about this, but Gallo has a strong creative voice. Recommend.

Heads off in a few too many directions for its own good. But as a vehicle for a character who's male-identifying, female-presenting, nonbinary and constantly being pressed to make entirely binary choices, it's both provocative and entertaining.

Ponyboi functions quite well as a nimble thriller for so long that one might miss its astuteness as a character study.

Ponyboi has good and bad parts to offer. And River Gallo's performance as Ponyboi can easily be the sum of its best parts.

Sundance breakout "Ponyboi" is as unwilling to settle on a plot as its main character is wary of strictly defining his gender.

The quiet character-based scenes are often mesmerizing, as are the dreamy sequences where time seems to stand still. When the plot makes its demands, the spell is broken.

Gallo's star-making turn pushes back against this version of hypermasculinity, reshaping genre conventions that have privileged rigid gender binaries. Watching Gallo carve out space for Ponyboi is its own kind of powerful assertion.

Ponyboi blends two familiar halves - a drug deal gone wrong and an LGBTQ+ coming-of-age story - into something fresh and compelling.

A breath of fresh air in modern indie crime thrillers.

Somewhat overwrought and undercooked, but nonetheless visually stylish, gritty, captivating and heartfelt.

Ponyboi is a revelation of a character who appears to have it all together, and once this mask cracks, he quickly shows that he doesn't, not even a little bit.

A campy visual feast that's dripping in neon, the style and vibe of this genre-blending LGBTQ+ film features likeable characters, refreshingly blunt sex scenes, and one hell of a wild, intense ride through New Jersey's underbelly.

At its core, it is an attempt to bring about a fresh point of view into a landscape well-trodden by countless other versions that play to the commonplace spaces previously seen.

Despite some pacing and plot fumbles, Arango's Ponyboi is a showcase for talented performances with River Gallo and Dylan O'Brien as standouts. Fierce and exciting, Ponyboi predicts a promising future for all involved.
Screen Rant

We've seen this story before but thanks to Gallo's sharp screenplay & Arango's direction, Ponyboi goes beyond cliché for something more profound.

Ponyboi does feel familiar plot-wise with its drug deal gone wrong and protagonist on the run, but the film presents a thought-provoking and personal story and will hopefully pave the way for more intersex representation on screen.

Ponyboi is a queer cinema genre pastiche that understands a movie can be artful, emotional, and incredibly entertaining.
The Hollywood Reporter
Lovia Gyarkye
A sleek film, only occasionally hampered by predictability and contrivance.
Variety

Cinema history is short on anyone remotely like Gallo, whose million-watt charisma and one-of-a-kind experience feel wasted in this role.

When the director Esteban Arango's "Ponyboi" is humming, it's an inventive crime-thriller.
