Open Water Ratings & Reviews
- The Gutter MonkeyDecember 16, 2024Raw, real, and scary. One of my favorite rom-coms.
- Karen Rendall6d ago1 hour and 19 minutes of my life wasted that I'll never get back...absolutely horrible!
- tjcta5October 26, 2025Open Water is a slow-burn survival thriller that feels unnervingly real. The pacing is quiet at first, but the tension keeps building until you realize how terrifying the situation truly is. It’s simple, realistic, and stays with you long after it’s over.

- DARTH VADERJanuary 14, 2026Open Water in my opinion, is the best Shark movie outside of the Original 👑 Jaws 🦈 My reasons why is the fact that this was based on actual events, that makes watching the film even more scary & haunting. I love the whole aesthetic of it and how it was all shot, making it feel to us the viewers watching, like we're watching the actual event itself take place. And a lot of that is to do with our 2 lead characters of the film Daniel & Susan, those 2 Actors who played that couple, were absolutely brilliant all the way through, they made it feel realistic with how they were reacting in certain situations, how they were arguing with eachother, that's how most people would be and behave in that situation and just how they were confideing in eachother throughout the whole experience, really did make it feel emotionally & psychologically raw & real. I also felt that the dialogue was very well written and really elevated the 2 Actors performance as well in it. I really found the atmosphere, suspence and sense of dread to be very powerful in this, especially in the night when there was thunder & lightning, and especially when we're seeing glimpses of the sharks beneath the surface! I thought that whole night sequence when Daniel was slowly being eaten alive, was absolutely disturbing, bone chilling and it really stayed with me for a long time after. Also I found when Susan was on her own, the next morning after Daniel had been killed and all of the masses of Blue Tip Sharks all circling around her, was the stuff of nightmares and the way that the camera was going a bit beneath the surface at a time, to show us glimpses of the amount of sharks that were circling around underneath her was all very impactful & effective! And to top it all off when Susan goes below the surface and drowns herself, because she's lost all hope in ever being found, it just leaves us the audience 👀 imagining what's going on beneath the surface as she's drowning, is she slowly being eaten alive by the Sharks as she's drowning, we don't know that's all we see is the vast emptiness of the ocean the moment after she goes below and that's powerful filmmaking because less is more, it's so true that saying is. I only have Steven Spielbergs Timeless Classic Jaws ahead of Open Water, of my favourite Shark movies of all time and on a technical level this is one of the best Shark movies out there, it's just so convincing & believable the whole time, whoever hasn't seen this 🙏 do yourself a favour and watch this very disturbing Shark movie that's based on true events!
- DigitalDisappointmentMarch 29, 2025Amateurish attempt at a movie. Crap video quality, camera work sucks, acting is so unnatural and insincere it's annoying. The 'music' at one point is so very bad, I couldn't believe it. I have seen movies with lower production values do better with less.
- jackmeatSeptember 7, 2025My quick rating - 5.8/10. Something short, and I swear I have seen this, but no record of that in my database. I had definitely seen this one, and it is still a frightening flick in the terror of being in a situation where there is literally nothing you can do. The isolation and hopelessness of the predicament these two found themselves in, while diving on tour at sea. The boat and the rest of the tourists leave while our two main characters are still underwater, stranding them miles out from shore. I like the fact that director Chris Kentis didn't "Hollywood" this up and focus on the sharks too much or try to glorify some man vs nature type thing. Instead, the sheer will to survive and all the range of emotions that would settle in are front and center. Couple the well-made aspects of making it all feel so real with the fact that this is based on a true story, and you will truly feel anxiety while you are viewing it. That is, if you can get by the lack of gore and often stretches of very little going on. Some may find this boring, but if you let your mind grasp what it would be like, I think you will get a lot more out of this one. Glad I went back and checked this one out again.
