Oddity Ratings & Reviews
- rg9400November 1, 2024Another excellent horror in a year filled with excellent horror movies. I went into this movie totally blind, and so I was able to enjoy the twists and turns of the plot. The first half in particular is very tense and mysterious, and it definitely was getting to me. The movie does rely a bit on jump scares, but it also creates a strong atmosphere that is heightened by the few jumps, leaving the viewer to just guess when the next shoe will drop. As the movie progresses and you start to figure out the secrets behind everything, I think some of the tension and scares get deflated, and I was able to predict some of the larger events. It still feels very fresh, though, and the inevitability of the plot is a function of how well designed and foreshadowed everything is. The use of shadows throughout is great. I constantly looked at the background, trying to parse out any outlines. The acting was pretty good, especially from Carolyn Bracken. A very intriguing movie worth your time.
- Allie TranMarch 3, 2025BEST horror of 2024
- RickFebruary 12, 2025Im going to have nightmares about the creepy wooden dude. The entire movie is very unsettling. One of the best horror movies of 2024.
- Desmond DaleJanuary 24, 2025A nice, concise and tight horror that feels fresh and inventive in comparison to the standard beat of Hollywood jump-scare-ridden sequels and spiritual successors. Oddity doesn't have a large cast of characters, nor is there a large variance of scene locations, but I believe its budget constraints seemed to work more in its favor than against it. There's just enough context and background to make the driving action effective but not so much where the film ever feels lulling or redundant. It plagues its viewers with long, study, focused instances of terror rather than quick, vapid jump scares. It's stripped down and lean and its ergonomic cast and set of locations only makes it more claustrophobic and unsettling.

- SpoonsOctober 11, 2024"Oddity" starts off with promise, set in a unique house that blends an old barn with modern aspects, creating an intriguing atmosphere. The hand-carved wooden golem creature adds to the tension, looming ominously. However, the film quickly becomes predictable, with me guessing the true antagonist early on, leaving little room for suspense or surprise. The main protagonist, played by Carolyn Bracken, delivers a strong performance, reminiscent of Gwendoline Christie. Tadgh Murphy, portraying Olin Ball, also stands out with a creepy and well-developed character arc. Despite these highlights, the film's predictability and shift towards a lackluster whodunit overshadow its potential for spookiness and weirdness. Overall, "Oddity" leaves much to be desired in the scares department, with only a few standout moments. This film will be popular with people who like The Witch (2015), The Hole in the Ground (2019), The Ritual (2017), and The Wicker Man (1973), for their folk horror elements, creepy settings, and supernatural themes.
- BigAbouALOctober 9, 2024Interesting concept, couldv'e had more scary moments to get a 4 star, but a good movie nonetheless.
