Next Sohee Ratings & Reviews
Hakihiko
June 25, 2025
Emotional and Thought-Provoking "Next Sohee" is a poignant and socially conscious film that quietly builds emotional weight as it unfolds. It explores harsh realities faced by young people entering the workforce, and the pressure and neglect that can lead to devastating consequences. The film is split into two parts, and while the first half focuses on the titular character and her struggles, the second half shifts perspective in a way that feels both jarring and effective. This narrative structure adds depth, even if it may not resonate equally with everyone. Visually, the movie is restrained but purposeful, and the performances-especially by Kim Si-eun as Sohee-are subtle yet impactful. There's a lingering sadness throughout the film that stays with you, though at times the pacing can feel a bit slow or stretched. "Next Sohee" doesn't offer easy resolutions, but it handles its themes with sensitivity and care. It's a solid film that's not always easy to watch, but certainly worth it.
Spectrum Culture
Erik Reeds
Next Sohee intelligently hones in on critiquing the economic system that causes malaise instead of painting a portrait of hostility coming from all directions.
Silver Screen Riot
Matt Oakes
Ju-ri paints a portrait of a young adult's evolution from student-to-worker that's deeply dehumanizing, revealing a shockingly broken system that's intentionally stacked against the Sohees of society. Powerful stuff.
Variety
Manuel Betancourt
Amid such a bleak and slow burn of a premise, Jung's "Next Sohee" is surprisingly warm-hearted.

Next Sohee ... (is) powerful film-making.
Drink in the Movies

Through riveting specificity July Jung's Next Sohee has created a powerful criticism of South Korean institutional failings. Making it one of the best sophomore films of the year, and the indelible result of a bonafide filmmaker.
Eye for Film
Jennie Kermode
There's a real sense of fury behind this film.
The Film Stage
Jared Mobarak
Jung showcases the system of gaslighting necessary to manipulate an entire nation's youth and reveals what the perpetrators think "strength" means by putting the camera in their faces to watch how every single one must involuntarily turn away in shame.
But Why Tho? A Geek Community
Kate Sánchez
Next Sohee is terrifyingly poignant...Stark and unyielding, July Jung's storytelling presents a masterclass in atmosphere and emotion. To be so delicate and yet so forceful with a story is not an easy task, and yet, Jung succeeds.
The Playlist
Elena Lazic
…Both its overall emotional landscape and its study of exploitation are stuck in a rather monotonous sense of indignation and tragedy that ultimately feels frustratingly unproductive.
