New Life Ratings & Reviews
- fraggle67March 12, 2025A fine sci-fi/horror film with great acting and a storyline that dispenses information slowly but steadily.
- jackmeatMarch 2, 2025My quick rating - 5.4/10. This flick introduces us to a mysterious woman on the run, Jessica, portrayed by Hayley Erin, and a resourceful fixer named Elsa, tasked with bringing her in. The film sets the stage for what promises to be an intense cat-and-mouse game with apocalyptic stakes, but unfortunately, it falls short of delivering on its premise. Jessica's character, while acted competently by Erin, often feels too passive. There are moments where Erin shines, showing the potential for a more dynamic character, but these moments are too few and far between. The film's pacing seems rushed, and as a result, not enough significant events unfold to keep the audience fully engaged. It is bizarre to say that a flick feels rushed when so little happens but that is just how it felt. One of the more intriguing elements of the film is the character Elsa, the officer pursuing Jessica, played by Sonya Walger. The twist of the officer being afflicted with ALS adds an interesting layer to the hunt, offering a unique and humanizing perspective on the relentless pursuit. Despite these promising aspects, the movie leans more towards being a pandemic thriller than a true horror film. The tension and atmosphere that typically define the horror genre are lacking, which may leave horror enthusiasts wanting more as I did. It has some compelling ideas and performances but doesn't quite manage to execute them effectively. The film's potential is hampered by its rushed pacing and underdeveloped plot, resulting in a thriller that feels more like a missed opportunity than a must-watch.
- DJOctober 17, 2024What a breath of fresh air when it comes to the standard tropes of cat and mouse horror movies. It would be a major spoiler to break down the second part of this film, but this movie is suspenseful, isolating and bleak. Check it out now!
- SpoonsNovember 29, 2024New Life blends horror mystery with a government pursuit storyline. The plot follows Jessica Murdoch, portrayed by Hayley Erin, who finds herself in the crosshairs of a relentless FBI agent, played by Sonya Walger. As the story unfolds, Jessica becomes entangled in a series of horrific events, adding layers of complexity to the chase. Despite its high production values and intriguing premise, the film struggles to fully commit to either its horror aspects or the suspense of the FBI pursuit. Jessica's character may come off as irritating to some viewers, which can detract from the overall experience. While "New Life" has moments of interest, it ultimately remains caught between genres, offering a viewing experience that may not fully satisfy fans of either. This film might appeal to those who enjoy a mix of supernatural intrigue and government pursuit, but there are more cohesive options available for a satisfying watch such as Contagion or Patient Zero.
