Naked Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardApril 13, 2026Didn’t really know what this was about going in, but it had been on my Criterion watchlist for a while. Though I liked the performances, particularly David Thewlis and much of the dialogue performed, his character is quite vile, and there’s a rank misogyny that permeates the whole film. I’ve only seen one other Mike Leigh film, Hard Truths. In that, Maryann Jean-Baptiste’s Pansy is another thorny lead character, abrasive and mean, but you at least get the sense that there’s something fragile and broken hidden on the inside. I didn’t get much of any redemptive or sympathetic qualities of Thewlis’ Johnny. Probably asking a lot of a film that opens with the protagonist r*ping a woman in an alley.
- cultfilmlikerMay 19, 2025Agonizing. Disturbing. Very cerebral and challenging. TW: lots of stuff dealing with sexual assault Thewlis is awfully animalistic. Moony out here committing sexual violence like wild and even stumbles on a damn Death Eater!! A very annoying, quick-witted, cynical, damaged man… Fun to watch!! “Resolve is never stronger than in the morning after the night it was never weaker” is just waxing poetic about post-nut clarity Still….some of the greatest dialogue in film Ewen Bremner was hilarious as always The score is incredible. Helps set the tone seamlessly. Poor Sophie A rare film that gets a very favorable rating but I am not comfortable with ‘liking’ lol
