- Gwyneth LlewelynJanuary 7, 2026Don't expect an Oscar-grade movie, because this isn't that. It's just a nerdy, sci-fi, light comedy typical of the late 1980s. The script is basic and quite easy to figure out in advance (the tiny twist at the end — which doesn't even involve the lead roles directly — is perhaps the only exception), the acting exaggerated (but that's what comedy is for, right?), and I just watched it because, well, I happen to be a Kim Basinger fan — she's a far better actress than what Hollywood used her for back then, which was unfortunately mainly to display her body (with the odd exception here and there). I've also always loved Dan Akroyd, and Jon Lovitt fits perfectly in his role as the rich, successful brother to the "mad" scientist, although both share the same fatal flaw: they aren't really *very* successful with women, each in his own nerdy, jerky way. The movie has this timeless quality — except, of course, for the *hair*. There's nothing like the hairstyles of the 1980s! Everything else, well, could have happened at any time — except that nobody is still glued to their smartphones, and a cellular phone is still a status symbol — and will probably be a pleasure to watch in another half of a century or so... That said, these were two pleasurable hours that made me keep a smile on all the time. You can't go wrong with these light comedies!
