- Hipster ZOMBIEApril 1, 2025I love the Mortal Kombat video game series and the original film hold a special place in my heart. However, this 2021 remake tries really too hard to be dark and gritty and doesn’t know how to have fun. The film also suffers from spending waaaay too much time trying establish a new character, Cole Young, who is bland and doesn’t really do much for the story. Also, where is the tournament?!? The entire film builds up to the tournament only to make us wait for it in a sequel? The fight scenes are overall decent but in a world where we have movie like “The Raid” I expect more from a live action MK film. A lot more.
- AntonioDecember 28, 2025Always expect better than what we get when it comes to MK films. This one was ok. The cast is mostly good, but better choices can be made ;) The Scorpion/Sub-Zero storyline is great. Told the story well. Action, fighting, effects and everything associated with S/SZ was great. This should've just been a Scopion/SubZero film instead. MK felt a bit fast like it was all rushed. Some stuff was done very poorly, from acting, effects and overall scenes. Just eh. I still watch it from time to time so its not the worst, just my opinion
- Kris WoodrowDecember 18, 2025It's just alright, it's entertaining enough.
- Michael SurberNovember 8, 2025A solid "4" for me. Best MK movie so far but that's not exactly a high bar. Overall it works for me even though there's only so much liberty they can do based on a video game. I mean, Resident Evil it's not, lol. Still there's enough to warrant watching it and truth be told it is entertaining. Decent SFX and martial arts and I know I'll be watching it again.
- mickerdooDecember 15, 2025A worthwhile reboot for fans of the original. Could have watched two more hours worth. Gory fatalities as expected. Lawson made a great Kano.
- cubano11October 7, 2025It was better than Mortal Kombat Annihilation, but that bar is so low it levels out on the other side of the planet. Jokes aside, it was a worthy retelling of the game lore.
- pearson858June 19, 2025Not bad but hoping Mortal Kombat 2 is better. Excited for Kitana.
- StreetterSeptember 4, 2025And I thought Annihilation was bad. My favorite character from the games was always Sweater Guy!
- jackmeatJuly 8, 2025My quick rating - 6.3/10. There are some movies that are clearly going to appeal to a certain audience. This is a great example since if you are unfamiliar with the game and its "universe," then this movie will be nothing more than a martial arts fest with some special effects thrown in. Oh, well, that is exactly what it is anyway. So, writing unbiased and not as a fan, this is a story about an MMA fighter who has to team up with some of the greatest fighters to save Earth from the evil outworld attackers. Strangely, this movie does a very good job of telling the stories that are involved with Sub-Zero and Scorpion quite well. This is all still based on a tournament that happens once a generation, where fighters have to go one-on-one to establish the fate of the world. The fighting sequences in this flick are done very well; there is no doubt about that one. Now I won't get carried away since this is still exactly what it is supposed to be, a popcorn flick. Sure for us fans, they did a favor in getting into the story a bit more, and possibly a disservice by adding a character considering there are already a crap ton of them in the first place. Huge fans will be pissed since some are missed. A casual action movie fan will be impressed that a video game movie delivers the goods, especially if they have seen the previous efforts of bringing it to the big screen. I enjoyed the 1995 version slightly less than this one, if that helps. (Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was such a bomb, it has left a bad taste in anyone's mouth). But as far as comparison, this is for sure the one to check out. More attention to detail, far better directing and camerawork. I don't mention acting since, really? Enjoy it for what it is, and don't expect it to be anything more than that.
