I've seen maybe 5 James Bond movies now? I can't remember what happens in any of them. Even this - the most recent - one I last watched maybe 3 years ago. But... this was my favourite. I think I kinda liked Goldfinger. & the rest I simply really didn't like. Not my series, I guess. But this one was pretty fun.

Loved the movie as a kid, not that much anymore. So many plot holes, locations make little sense and Jaws is just a terrible villain

Not a great Bond, hasn't aged well. Story is a bit all over the place. Lot better Bonds in the franchise.

James Bond brand so strong it can survive an entry like this. Moore’s run got so comedic so fast it baffles me. Like, who thought it was a good idea to give the giant, steel-mouthed henchman a love interest? At the end of The Spy Who Loved Me it famously stated "James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only" but the production team bumped up Moonraker to capitalize on the sci-fi genre popping off at the time thanks to Star Wars. Reactionary Bond strikes again!

is goofy, glossy, and kind of impossible to take seriously. Roger Moore is charming as ever, and some of the locations are genuinely fun, but the whole thing goes wildly off the rails once Bond hits space. It’s entertaining in a dumb, popcorn way—but well, Stars Wars fucked up this movie pretty bad. Still enjoyable if you’re in the mood for peak ’70s excess and don’t mind Bond with lasers.

The conquest of space and rich villan that wants to start his own new race is a little extreme but nevertheless enjoyed the plot, action, suspense, and comedy woven into the henchmen and Bond going at each other. Jaws back again, makes interesting scenes.

Perfectly campy, perfectly Roger Moore. *Spoilers* Of all the 007's, Roger Moore had the most campy and silly of the outings. That would be a thing to haunt the next 007, but not in this film! Most of the film is centered around evading capture, being captured, left to die in easily escapable situations, and a serious investigation with as much depth as a sheet of folded paper. First, let's address the elephant in the room. Who spends money on a supposed foreign dignitary if they don't have to? Especially when they spend 30 seconds with that foreign dignitary and immediately order their execution. Who didn't see the fight in the glass museum happening? Although I expected there to be some fighting at the kiln. I think the biggest laugh that kept coming in my screening came with the gondola turned powerboat, turned hovercraft. Watching this film is like watching a really good "try not to laugh" challenge. This is a fun film filled with action, slapstick, and Holly Goodhead...guess what her specialty is. Bond does indeed sleep with at a point in the movie. If you guessed Holly Goodhead is an astrophysicist or astronautical engineer, you'd be wrong because she is, in fact, a CIA agent. The titular villain, Drax, from the very start, has no character development outside of being a wealthy dick to guys he's just met. I suppose that is fitting for a man who doesn't do research on his enemy before trying to kill him while also having a God complex.

Not the worst one, but still a train wreck after the initial opening scene.

After the opening sequence, it all goes downhill. What's funny is that I remember "Moonraker" as a good movie.
  • MR_BigTimeFebruary 13, 2025
Enjoyable for the most part if you don't take it too seriously, regardless of whether Moonraker means you to or doesn't want you to.
