- Manuel FrangisApril 16, 2025I just watched Monsters University, and I give it 4 out of 5 stars. This movie is such a fun return to the world of Monsters, Inc., but with a whole new spin. Instead of continuing the story from the first movie, this one takes us back to how it all started — back to college, before Sulley and Mike were best friends, and when they were just two totally different monsters trying to prove themselves. It is part buddy comedy, part underdog story, and part college movie — all wrapped up in Pixar’s signature heart and style. Right off the bat, the energy of this movie is totally different from Monsters, Inc.. It is louder, faster, and more about competition than the emotional family story we saw in the original. But that’s not a bad thing. This one knows what it wants to be — a fun, colorful story about two monsters who have to figure out how to work together. It’s full of that Pixar magic, but this time it’s mixed with frat parties, scare training, and a monster version of college life. Mike Wazowski is the real lead this time, and I liked that. He’s smart, hardworking, and determined to become a top scarer — even though nobody really believes in him. You can’t help but root for him. Billy Crystal’s voice performance is still perfect. Sulley, voiced by John Goodman, starts out kind of cocky and lazy, which is fun to see because we know where he ends up later. Watching their friendship slowly come together is one of the best parts of the movie. The supporting cast is packed with fun new characters. You’ve got the misfit crew from the Oozma Kappa frat, who are weird and awkward in the best way. There’s Squishy, who’s adorable and strange, and Art, who’s just… wild. They’re not the cool kids on campus, but they bring so much heart to the story. Even the rival frat and the strict dean, Hardscrabble, add good tension to the mix. The movie doesn’t rely on just Mike and Sulley — it builds a whole world of monster college life, and it’s actually really fun to watch. Visually, the movie looks amazing. Pixar doesn’t miss. The campus is full of bright colors, weird architecture, and tons of monster details that make every scene interesting. From the classrooms to the scare simulator to the big Scare Games competition, everything looks great and moves fast. The animation is sharp, the character designs are super creative, and it all feels alive. I give Monsters University 4 out of 5 stars because it’s a great prequel that gives real depth to two characters we already love. It’s not as emotional or groundbreaking as Monsters, Inc., but it doesn’t try to be. It’s fun, well made, and has a solid message about hard work, failure, and finding your place even when it’s not the place you thought you were meant for. Overall Monsters University is a clever, entertaining, and heartfelt origin story that shows how Mike and Sulley went from rivals to best friends. It’s packed with fun characters, strong visuals, and the kind of humor and energy that make Pixar movies so rewatchable. I had a great time watching it.
- Mister ArnMay 22, 2025I've got a soft spot for college frat movies. I know they're crap, but I still like watching them. When looking for a movie to watch with my grandson, I thought this might be one we could enjoy together. I was wrong. On a positive note, my four-year-old grandson liked it, but then he didn't understand the plot.
