Miami Vice Ratings & Reviews
- Joe GFebruary 25, 2026This was watched largely because more and more people are attempting to elevate Michael Mann into the tier of directors who must be revered without qualification. There is a familiar Venn diagram overlap with those who insist Paul Thomas Anderson is the greatest director alive and want Mann seated at the same table. Fine. Then the entire filmography should be defended, including this. Mann’s career has moments of genuine brilliance. This is not one of them. The dialogue, acting, plot, and direction all feel mechanical. It’s formulaic in a way that’s almost impressive, as if generated by a machine before machines were capable of doing so. The clichés are trite. The camera work, so often cited as Mann’s strength, adds nothing here. A love interest exists without consequence. Characters move through the story without depth, connection, or interiority. The film insists Miami is sleek, erotic, and dangerous, yet the digital aesthetic and washed grading undermine that premise at every turn. The world is supposed to feel alive and intoxicating, but it instead feels distant and sterile. This plays closer to a Michael Bay production, except Bay at least understands spectacle as entertainment. Here, there is no fun, no tension, no propulsion. If Michael Mann belongs in the upper echelon of American directors, this film has to be accounted for. And there is no way to account for it.
- marshalseaJune 4, 2025Proving everything Ive ever said about Michael Manns lack of ability writ large. Bad, and so bad some great actors can't save it. Scenes drag needlessly on, rubbish documentary style running around a gun fight from one side to another that doesn't make sense... and lets not firget the awful music - not sure how they got that wrong when the series is cant move for great music. Also, when Naomie Harris gets in the shower and changes colour, cause all black people are the same obviously, and casting an Irish actor as a Japanese person....ouch. Needed to be given to someone competent, but at least it wasnt two shouty peoplp shouting at each other and over shadowing a great performance by Val Kilmer.
