Scorsese shows a glimpse of his little dark age to come with Mean Streets, a raw and brilliant early vision of the worlds he would build. The film pulses with Catholic guilt, street-level grime, and the chaotic energy of a filmmaker just beginning to flex his power. Watching De Niro and Keitel collide under Scorsese’s eye is like seeing the first spark of a storm that would change cinema forever.

A blueprint for many directors to follow. Scorsese builds on his first film, presenting the lives of Italian-American men getting into trouble in 1970s NYC. Despite an iconic score and great performances, this film meanders too much without a compelling enough plot. 🎶Be my baby🎶
