🏈 The underdog movie that never asked for permission. 🧊 First there was The Mighty Ducks. Then came The Sandlot. And eventually… Little Giants. Together, they kicked off a very specific ’90s trend: kids’ sports movies that were less about winning and more about belonging. Little Giants felt like the end of that run. The last time I’d seen it was on cable in 1995, and revisiting it 31 years later, it holds up far better than expected. At least by kids’ movie standards. The humor lands, the underdog energy still works and the cast is way more diverse and memorable than many of its peers. It even boasts real NFL legends sprinkled throughout. And let’s be honest, if you had a pulse watching this film, you most likely had a crush on Icebox. What’s interesting is that despite all of this, Little Giants never quite crossed into full sports-comedy canon. It’s fondly remembered, but rarely crowned a classic alongside its contemporaries. Maybe that changes with VOD and new generations discovering it out of order, without the baggage of comparison. Maybe someday it becomes a classic to the masses. But for those of us who lived in that era, it already is one. Not because it was perfect, but because it captured a moment when kids’ movies trusted their audience to be a little weird, a little messy and fully themselves.

Hadn’t seen this in like 25 years and it still holds up way better than I expected. For a kids/family sports movie it’s actually really fun and easy to watch. Rick Moranis is a straight-up legend as the coach, the football stuff is goofy in a good way, and Ed O’Neill as the villain coach is great — you half expect him to remind everyone he once scored 5 touchdowns in one game. It’s cheesy, sure, but that’s kind of the point. Just a solid, feel-good movie that does exactly what it’s supposed to do

Had a childhood crush on Ice Box. Such a diverse array of characters. Great casting. Fun family movie.

Not quite the Mighty Ducks of football.
