Little Death Ratings & Reviews

David Schwimmer stars as Martin, a television writer hoping to make the jump to the silver screen. His neuroses and prescription addiction has put a strain on he and his wife’s (Jena Malone) relationship. And when his film’s potential financier has some notes about a change to his protagonist, the narrative takes a turn. Reminded me of Charlie Kaufman’s Adaptation for the first half of the film (one of my favorites, btw). The second half of the film presents a POV shift and follows a young couple of friends (Dominic Fike and Talia Ryder) trying to make a prescription drug score that goes a bit haywire. Ryder continues to impress with her performance here (probably my favorite of the film). Criticisms of big pharma bubble under the surface of the narrative of the entire film. Aside from that, there’s scarce little connective tissue between the first half and second half, at least on first viewing. I kind of loved the big swings, though and it definitely feels like one of those films that has a lot more to unpack. I say check it out. There’s a better than average chance you may hate it though. So….there’s that too. 😁

Unfortunately, Begert's structural audacity isn't in service to its story or two. A decent story within Little Death is buried behind a tedious one.

Surreal, idiosyncratic, and cynical, this film has a vibe that a certain segment of indie audiences are going to adore.

Every character is unlikable and the animation and other artistic choices are the most basic of Sundance chic

Little Death's unexpected trajectory will keep viewers guessing.

The results with Begert's mid-film switch are clunky and don't hit it out of the park entirely, but at least he tried something different.

Little Death is an interesting look into the minds of Angelenos from different generations, on opposite ends of the pill-popping spectrum.
Screen Rant

Little Death's satire of Hollywood feels familiar, muddled by murky politics & it doesn't help that Schwimmer is outshined by younger co-stars.

Too much of LITTLE DEATH feels like having your cake and eating it too, leaving all the good aspects to be canceled by the bad ones so the audience is left with nothing but a shallow promise and wasted potential.
Consequence

The second half never quite lives up to the first half, and the first half feels incomplete as a narrative, which leaves the whole film feeling like a disappointment. Doug Liman's Go did all of this a lot better, over two decades ago.

As Little Death zig-zags like a sidewinder in the desert, Begert strikes a neat balance between esoteric inscrutability and blunt messaging

Little Death tries to cram two very different stories into one flawed movie.

Here is a film that almost dares you to talk about it, simply because it's not playing by the rules.

My advice is that It's not a good idea to make two different movies and release them as one movie.
United Press International
Fred Topel
Martin's narration runs through a lot to concepts about perception and reality. As big as those ideas may be, director Jack Begert uses the same old cinematic techniques to convey them.

However disjointed its tales might be, Little Death boasts strong performances across the board.
The Hollywood Reporter
Lovia Gyarkye
Little Death can't fulfill the ambitions of its intellectual exercise, resulting in a bifurcated film that doesn't find its footing until the end.
IndieWire
Esther Zuckerman
You can see Begert's intent in the disjointed arc of the film... Yet the whiplash of the structure is just too forceful. In splitting up the film like this every character feels shortchanged, and the relationships aren't given any time to flourish.

Proves that if you try to make two films at once, you're really just making two half-films.
TheWrap

"Little Death" may not be a perfect film, but it is a testament to its producer and well-known director Darren Aronofsky's enduring ability to identify fresh talent and tell stories that define moments in need of capturing.
