In the suburbs of Rome, translator Vittoria breaks her engagement with her boyfriend, writer Riccardo, after a troubled night. Vittoria goes downtown to meet her mother, who is addicted to the stock market, and she meets materialist broker Piero on a day the stock-market crashes. Piero and Vittoria begin a monosyllabic relationship.
- lennyofficial2d agoAn intriguing tug-of-war plays out between a translator named Vittoria and a stockbroker named Piero. Monica Vitti perfectly embodies Vittoria as the very incarnation of romantic angst. She wants to break up with her fiancé—who tries to "make her happy" but only succeeds in driving her further away. The two lovers don't get together right away, held back by Vittoria's insecurity; eventually, however, she lets her guard down and wants to see him again and again, endlessly. Alain Delon commands the screen with his irresistible charm (fuck, I want to be him). I think the final scene represents my ultimate "couple goals" for a lifelong partner. Furthermore, the film makes excellent use of framing and the imagery created by those shots. We are clearly dealing with a high-quality, accomplished work.
- Charles LondonFebruary 25, 2025The story within the pictures isn't as much the story as the pictures telling it. Michelangelo Antonioni uses his camera to create a visual masterpiece in exquisite black-and-white, with his celluloid canvas highlighted by beautiful lead actors in all of their photogenic glory. A chatty picture this is not. It's the lens that does most of the talking.
