A commercial diver is stranded on the seabed with only five minutes of oxygen supply, but with no chance of rescue for more than 30 minutes. With access to amazing archival footage, this is the true story of one man’s impossible fight for survival.

okay after watching both this and the 2025 retelling i can appreciate that film a lot more for how it portrayed the narrative. the archival footage here is still mortifying, especially when chris is unconscious and twitching. powerful story, but the documentary lacks the punch the retelling has.

The suspense is real and it's an incredible story. Despite that, though, it still feels slightly hollow due to the choices in how to tell the documentary. It would have benefited from having interviews with experts to help explain things more. For instance, an explanation is never given for exactly what "saturation" diving is, why it's needed, or why it requires being isolated. Without that basic information, viewers who don't already know might be left wondering "well, why didn't they just send someone else down to help?" Still, it remains a fascinating story and it's a worthwhile watch, even if you might be left wondering a little about how much more the documentary could have been.

Just watched the 2025 Hollywood version of this story, but my buddy (a saturation diver himself) told me that I should check out this documentary if I wanted a better idea of the mechanics and logistics of how a saturation dive works. Definitely agree, this is so much more clear about what’s happening, what’s at stake than the recent film. Not only that, it even hits the emotional beats harder because we’re getting crew and some families first hand accounts of their experiences and their emotional reactions. Definitely worth checking out. It’s kind of insane what these guys do on a regular basis, let alone what happens in this story when sh🤩 hits the fan. Absolutely wild how long it took them to try the old-turn-it-off-and-turn-it-back-on. Is that not step one, anymore?
