Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes offers a riveting narrative paired with breathtaking visuals. Although it doesn't eclipse the benchmarks of the Caesar-centered trilogy, it solidly holds its ground, continuing the legacy of the Planet of the Apes saga with flair. The visuals continue to astound. Bringing the apes to life in this franchise from a vfx perspective is second only to what James Cameron has accomplished in the Avatar franchise. There’s a third act set piece that feels like an ode to The Way of Water. [Read my Full Review here] Set generations after the Caesar Trilogy (is there a name for it yet?) Caesar is but a memory, but his legacy looms large. One of my favorite aspects of this reboot is how different clans of apes may all hold Caesar up as a messianic figure and proselytize his teachings (Apes together, strong. Etc) yet, they can still fall in opposition to each other. I think the human character motivations muddies the water considerable, particularly in the latter half of the film. I’ll have to see how well it holds up on repeat viewings. The new cast of apes is really strong. The opening sequence which sets up the friendship of Noa, Soona and Anaya is as compelling as it is beautiful. I didn’t recognize literally any of the voices, which helped to immerse me in the world right away. I checked my watch one time when I started to feel the pace drag and that was at around the 1 hour and 30 minute mark. So there was still an hour left to go at that point. The pace does pick up again, but I don’t necessarily think the second half is as good as the first half. Overall, it’s a very strong reboot to the franchise. I definitely see the potential for where Wes Ball can take the franchise if given the opportunity. A Strong 3.5 (very close to giving it a 4) and I’m hopeful that this film finds some box office success.
- Nathan MagretaJune 26, 2025Though not nearly as great as the masterpiece of the other movies, this is still a fun and worthy addition to one of history's greatest franchises.
- The Whispering PopJune 23, 2025Distant from the trilogy it's based upon, however a very good adventure with the new trio and some good twists. Eager for the next one!
- darsanJune 15, 2025a great start to a new era and i enjoyed listening to the score moree the second time.
- GuillaumeMay 31, 2025So boring….
- Spaceman JoeMay 29, 2025It feels like a continuation of the trilogy while also leaving the trilogy alone. Set far after those events, it can do its own thing. And it does it well.
- Mister ArnMay 17, 2025The visual effects and cinematography in "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" are outstanding. The performances by the ape characters convey genuine emotion, which is unexpectedly impactful. However, the storyline felt predictable and seemed to be laying the groundwork for future films.
- VarunOctober 19, 2024This was pretty decent for a legacy sequel. The vfx of this whole franchise is impeccable and just keeps getting better. Noa is an interesting protagonist as he begins from a place of weakness and ignorance but works hard to forge a path of his own and go against precedent to do the right thing. The plot is good but the pacing is a bit lacklustre in the middle portion of the movie. Raka is a cool character but he uncannily felt more human and is also underutilised. I liked how they handled the world building, how history gets warped into different myths and religions to serve the interests of village leaders or tyrannical despots to exercise control and how vital knowledge can easily be lost with the destruction of technology and books which may take centuries to recuperate from. There were some good moral conundrums explored towards the end too, with Proximus Caesar having some good motivations as a villain but Noa believing that the end doesn’t justify the means. The cityscape is beautiful, and although it is very natural for an abandoned world to turn out this way, it is starting to get a little uninspired after seeing similar visual representations in other movies and shows. Overall I enjoyed this movie and I’m really hoping this franchise goes on forever because there’s so much potential for great storytelling and action sequences and I’m glad that I still remain a fan after Caesar’s demise in the previous trilogy.
- The Movie HaterApril 16, 2025I did not enjoy this movie at all. In fact, I hated it.
- randomparticlesMay 10, 2025I am biased. I really like this series. Amazing how far cgi has come. The movie takes you to another world either in the past or the what could be our future and forces you to evaluate what matters in life. What would you do if those things were taken away? Many similarities to 2025 political characters. Good acting. Great script.
- samse14April 12, 2025Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is an absolute gem in the film world! It takes you on an incredible journey filled with thrilling action sequences, heartfelt moments, and thought-provoking themes. The storytelling is top-notch, weaving together a compelling narrative that keeps you glued to the screen from start to finish.
- N8October 10, 2024I really liked this. The rebooted Apes franchise has been among the best and most interesting blockbusters of the last decade or so. It was on par with the previous 3 films, though on first impression this may be my least favorite by a smidge. One of the major highlights of the movie was the exploration of all of the different cultures that emerged in the generations that followed War. I loved the detail in how each of them dealt with Caesar's legacy and the world that Humans left behind. In a sense it reminded me of Fallout, despite the massive difference in tone. I've heard some people complain about the pacing being too slow, but a version of this movie that doesn't take the time to relish in the details is quite frankly a worse version of the movie. The religious allegory baked into the script was quite clever. The irony of us knowing Caesar's entire story that the characters in this can't know was quite clever and made for an engaging watch. The other highpoint of the movie for me was the visual effects. For CGI and photo realistic characters, this among the best uses of the technology that has ever been used. On a technical level the only thing on par with this is Avatar: The Way Of Water. Weta really is the best in the industry. Of course with VFX this good, you need a filmmaker who understands the technology on a deep scale, which Wes Ball certainly does. The motion capture as well is at it's most technically advanced. The level of detail in the faces of the apes is stunning. However beneath all of the bells and whistles. Motion Capture acting is still just acting. In spite of all of the cast giving good performances, and everyone was here was good, they all fall short of Andy Serkis's legendary performance as Caesar. Although that was one of the best performances of the 21st century so far, and I won't judge anyone for not being as good. The aspect of the movie I am most mixed on is the ending reveal of the humans in the bunkers. Quite frankly the poetic ending of War, with the might of the humanity being wiped out once and for all in that avalanche was the perfect ending for human civilization in this franchise. I can't see any future story about Humans versus Apes being as interesting as the two Reaves films. Quite frankly I would like to see this franchise explore new ground as it makes its way to the inevitable remake of the 68 movie. Kingdom certainly did explore new ground and I hope the sequels do as well. Everyone already knows how a human versus ape story will end.
- KingcubeeeMarch 12, 2025Not a bad follow up from the trilogy but it clearly lacks the trilogy's charm, or I just miss Caeser.
- Hipster ZOMBIEMarch 6, 2025I enjoy the Planet of the Apes films but despite the amazing special effects this film just kind of felt like more of the same. I would like to see them reintroduce the mutated cult people from Beneath The Planet of the Apes. At least it would add an interesting new element to any further sequels. As for this film though, it’s good, great even in some parts it’s just more of the same and that’s never good for the start of a new trilogy.
- HumptyFebruary 23, 2025I miss Caesar.
