Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy Ratings & Reviews

Kids In The Hall was a brilliant sketch comedy series that got me through high school. Cabbage Head, the head crusher, “he’s hip, he’s cool, he’s 40”, the Chicken lady, the temps and so many more brilliant characters throughout the series. After the series ended, the Kids decided to make a movie. Dave Foley was ready to move on. He only signed on for the movie thinking it wouldn’t happen. When Lorne Michaels convince Paramount to make it, they had to sue Foley to honor his deal. The movie apparently was hell to work on, with reshoots, fired editors, cast at each other’s throats, the director of the Cynthia Rothrock cheesefeet behind the camera. It was a mess. So why is it still one of my favorite hard to find movies? Dave Foley, Mark McKinney, Bruce McCullough, Kevin McDonals and Scott Thompson star as multiple characters throughout. Foley wasn’t in it as much…obviously. Many famous actors were nearly cut out completely, like Jeanne Garofalo. The movie is about pharmaceuticals and the nature of celebrity and morality. I know, I’m getting philosophical about a dumb comedy, but it is about those things. It’s smart, funny and absolutely absurd. McKinney’s impression of Lorne Michaels as the head of Roritor Pharmaceuticals was a big highlight. Same with Revo, the Glen Danzig looking rock singer who takes a drug that locks onto his happiest memory and suddenly he’s singing about moonbeams and puppy dogs. And let us not forget Scott Thompson’s hilarious Mrs. Hurdicure. This movie has the same sense of humor as the show and if you like that then you’ll love this as much as me. If you don’t, skip it. But I will always celebrate my signed DVD and my framed Brain Candy movie poster on the wall while I go around shouting “CAT ON MY HEAD!” and “OW! MY FOOT! OW! MY OTHER FOOT!!!” and “I wanna talk about drugs. (Hashish?) No, not hashish. (Heroin?) No, not heroin. (Horse tranquilizers?!) No, not horse tranquilizers. I just heard about this new drug that makes you happy. I just wanna say…f@$& happy!” But I digress. I just love this movie.

I think it's supposed to be a comedy. Perhaps because no one in the cast adjusted his performance style to the big screen, I may have thought about laughing three times over the 90-some minutes.
The Advocate
Geoff Gordon
Unfortunately, what works for the Kids on TV doesn't work as well in their first feature film.
Blu-ray.com
Brian Orndorf
Despite a subject matter that deals with misery, the picture is very funny, with sharp visual style to support this often wild journey into the business of being unhappy.
The Spool
Peter Sobczynski
Yet despite its unevenness, Brain Candy is a very funny movie whose principal comedic concerns are as viable today as they were a quarter-century ago.
IGN Movies
Chris Carle
it's thoroughly quotable, infinitely watchable and so rich with detail that you'll be laughing at something new every time you watch it.
Chicago Tribune
Gene Siskel
A bold and totally off-the-wall comedy.
TV Guide
There are some very funny bits, but they're interspersed with long stretches of exposition that drag the whole thing down, down, down.
Variety
Leonard Klady
The ensemble is assured and adroitly gets the gags across without telegraphing punch lines.
Newsweek
David Ansen
A twisted comedy for twisted times, this movie made me happy. Go figure.
JoBlo's Movie Network

It was supposed to be a comedy, but it just wasn't funny. End of story.
San Francisco Chronicle
Edward Guthmann
A splendid showcase for their diverse, frisky talents.
USA Today
Andy Seiler
Some of this is very funny; much of it isn't.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
Reader, I did not laugh.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
It's like one long sketch that never seems to rocket off into the inspired heights of lunacy the series maintained so well.
Washington Post
Rita Kempley
[A] shrill and slovenly opus.
New York Times
Janet Maslin
Isn't anything more than a sloppy showcase for the group's costume-changing tricks, but sometimes its sheer chutzpah can be amusing.
