When a UFO lands in Milton’s (Ben Kingsley) back yard crushing his azaleas, he welcomes the extra-terrestrial visitor with a blanket, a glass of water, and apples. But when he tells other folks in his small West Pennsylvania town about his guest, almost no one believes him. Most people write Milton off as simply losing it and pay no attention to his claims. One friend even begs him to stop saying things like that because it hurts the credibility of the other senior citizen’s claims. Milton’s not losing it, though. There is definitely an alien in his back yard. But the harsh truth is that Milton also is losing it. His faculties are degrading with age. He’s not as sharp as he used to be. His new alien friend, in a way, forces Milton to face his own mortality and come to grips with the fact that he may not be long for this world, and his existence on it may be about to change. "This remote only controls the volume. If I press any other buttons, then I have to call my daughter, Denise, to fix it and then she gets REALLY frustrated at me. " I absolutely died at this quote, to the point where I almost had to exit the theater because it’s such a perfect description of a common interaction between my mother and I. It was decidedly hilarious, but it simultaneously made me sad that she might possibly describe us this way. Jules implores us to consider what it’s like to grow old and to have empathy for our elders. Everyone deserves companionship, connection, dignity and respect. Really cute movie

Director Marc Turtletaub keeps the mood light, though there's a poignant undertow to a story that's as much about being allowed to grow old with dignity as it is about an extraterrestrial.

Sensitive, intelligent, sweet, and presented with considerable integrity, right down to the direction, which is scrupulous in not showing anything that doesn't actually need to be seen.

As fanciful as it may seem, "Jules" is really a comment on aging and loneliness.
San Francisco Chronicle

Quon, a Hollywood stuntwoman wearing a prosthetic suit, turns in an astonishingly moving silent performance.

the character grows on you over time, even if he never quite achieves a real sense of emotional connection, which is why the film's heavier lifting has to be done by the subplots involving the inescapable effects of advanced age
Los Angeles Times
Sergio Burstein
Director Marc Turtletaub, who has a long track as a producer and finds himself within the age range of his actors, treats this theme with the correct finesse. [Full review in Spanish]

What sounds like the same old story is actually one of the year's most pleasant surprises.

Jules is a slight film but an enjoyable one. I've come to value any film that offers actors I like something offbeat to add to their resumé.

"Jules" utilizes the alien encounter not to explore the possibilities of extraterrestrial life but to paint a portrait of life on Earth. It's a simple tale, simply told, but with a lot of heart and humanity at the center of it all.

A compassionate character study that accomplishes what few current films do: a sweet, simple sense of wonder.
Boston Globe

While watching this film, I heard someone say "What the [F-bomb]?" three times.
Movie Mom
Nell Minow
This is a low-key charmer, a kind of "E.T" for AARP, with a gentleness to the story that is very endearing.
Austin Chronicle
Trace Sauveur
Ostensibly, this is a film about rediscovering one's humanity by way of otherworldly emotional connection, but the relationship between the central trio and Jules himself never feels particularly resonant.
New York Times

It often feels as though Turtletaub would rather you be curled up in your seat with a mug of cocoa than on the edge of it. But the sweetness isn't entirely unwelcome - not every alien movie can be "Alien."
San Jose Mercury News
Randy Myers
The cast is a delight, especially Kingsley, whose befuddled glances make your heart swell to the bursting point once you start to realize this is but a sci-fi-laced parable on the alienation that so many mature adults experience in today's society.
Washington Post
Michael O'Sullivan
It's less a sci-fi parable... than a fairy tale reminding us that the tribulations of getting old are more natural than sad, and best done in the company of loved ones.
IndieWire
David Ehrlich
A movie that's often too content with its own weirdness to work on any other grounds. "Jules" isn't funny enough or heartbreaking enough or anything enough to meaningfully expand on its basic idea.
Arizona Republic
Bill Goodykoontz
We spend most of our time with Kingsley, who makes the audience care about Milton without pandering through emotional shortcuts.
The Hollywood Reporter
Frank Scheck
Featuring sterling performances from an uncharacteristically underplaying Ben Kingsley alongside Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin, Jules emerges as a low-key delight.
