John Carter Ratings & Reviews

This movie was failed by marketing. On its run up, some commercials showed a western, others showed sci-fi; never truly showing it was both. Not adding "of Mars" also hampered it. For the movie itself - it had been a long time since I felt the wonder and awe of cinema - not since the original Star Wars trilogy. This should have kicked off a franchise - but like Sorcerer's Apprentice, Prince of Persia, and Tron: Legacy - they were one-offs that Disney didn't have the patience to develop further.

Love this film! Severely maligned and mistreated over the years, it's earned some respect since it's release. A film failed by a lousy marketing team- WHO is John Carter? Is that the doctor from the tv series, E/R? Yes, but not here.... the title is dull and explains nothing. A simple, "And the Princess of Mars," would have saved the film from it's eventual sad fate. Still, it's a terrific adventure with some great music. Taylor Kitch was in his third or fourth flop in his attempt to be a star, lol.

A fun movie, but the source material was serialized, and thus the plot would have benefited more as a limited TV series than the herky-jerky 132 minutes that we ended up with.

One of my favorite movies. Deep plot with great world building and a fun narrative.

This movie is quite confusing an intense at times, but was enjoyable. It felt like multiple other movies I’ve seen all combined due to the sceneries and the vibe at times, but is very unique. It felt like it was adventurous, mysterious, and love all wrapped into one.

Not read the books but familiar with the concept. You need to remember the book is one of the original science fiction tropes. Think of it like an alternative reality where Barsoom is Mars. The film doesn't add to the stories/tropes, but it does entertain. Still one of my favourites. It is unfortunate they changed the title from John Carter of Mars.

Time and history will prove that this film was far better than it was credited. All that talk about how it was “so bad” it ruined an industry is problematic because we have crap that comes out now that should have bankrupt everything. This was a solid film, solid story. I think there were just a bunch of black balling and politics. As today there are processes and strategies to tell you a film is great… and you believe it… there are forces and strategies to tell you a film is terrible until it crashes and burns…. And you believe it.

Hugely underrated film, still ahead of its time.

I’ve got this one on DVD, and yeah, I like it. It’s a shame it bombed, because it really didn’t deserve the label it got. People talk about it like it was some massive disaster, but when you actually sit down and watch it, it’s a solid sci-fi adventure. The world-building is huge, the visuals are impressive (especially for 2012) and the cast does a good job with what they’re given. The story’s got that old-school pulp vibe, sword fights, flying ships, ancient cities and yeah, it’s a bit dense at times, especially if you don’t know the books. But it’s not confusing, just ambitious. You can tell they were setting up a trilogy and it’s a shame that it never got the chance to continue. It’s not perfect, the ending feels a little rushed and the romance is kind of forced, but it’s nowhere near the mess people made it out to be. Honestly, it feels like the marketing killed it more than the movie did. Dropping “of Mars” from the title? Bad move. Made it sound like a generic drama instead of the space fantasy it actually is. But for me, it’s one of those underdog sci-fi flicks that I’ll keep coming back to. It’s got heart, scale and a weird charm that sticks. If you’ve never seen it, give it a shot. Just ignore the reputation as it doesn’t deserve it in my opinion.

Decent movie and credible CGI, plot and script was fluid, have to say Lynn Collins has nice set of legs.
