In the Mouth of Madness Ratings & Reviews
Michael Heimgartner
February 2, 2025
7/10 – A Lovecraftian Descent into Madness In the Mouth of Madness is a slow-burn psychological horror with strong Lovecraftian vibes. Sam Neill delivers a fantastic performance, guiding us through an eerie, surreal nightmare. The creature design is top-notch, and the dramatic ending leaves an impact. While some pacing issues exist, its gradual descent into insanity makes it a must-watch for cosmic horror fans.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
Cheesy horror celebrating the power of cheesy horror, while pretending to be appalled.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
One wonders how In the Mouth of Madness might have turned out if the script had contained even a little more wit and ambition.

The most simplified stories are often the best ones...it's not just an entertaining Twilight Zone-esque film, you can really tell that Carpenter and De Luca were trying to create something different.
FanboyNation.com
Sean Mulvihill
We've all seen monsters and murders on the screen before, but what's terrifying is not understanding the very nature of the reality that you occupy.
The Blogging Banshee
Molly Henery
In the Mouth of Madness is another marvelous work of art by John Carpenter, albeit a lesser known work.
Reel Film Reviews
David Nusair
Filmmaker Carpenter, working from Michael De Luca's screenplay, kicks John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness with a striking (and engrossing) in-media-res opening that immediately captures the viewer's interest and attention...
Austin Chronicle
Joey O'Bryan
A fun, clever horror picture, full of creepy crawlies, things that go bump in the night, and references to everyone from H.P. Lovecraft to Dario Argento.
Lessons of Darkness
Nick Schager
Finely attuned to the disquieting realm of the irrational.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
While it's more ambitious than most Carpenter works from this period, it's not any more satisfying.
Los Angeles Times
Kevin Thomas
A thinking person's horror picture that dares to be as cerebral as it is visceral.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
Uninvolving, abysmally scripted horror picture.
Washington Post
Richard Harrington
Eventually falls apart because of its erratic plot and gaps in logic.
Film.com
John Hartl
A stylized collection of well-timed shockers, helped along by the contributions of its capable cast.
The Movie Sleuth
Michelle Kisner
This is one of the best Lovecraft adaptations committed to film and it's not even based on any of his works!
The Ringer
Sean Fennessey
[The] movie has a lot to say about the dangers of cultural obsession and what happens when you give yourself over to the creators you idolize.
Chicago Reader
Jonathan Rosenbaum
In the Mouth of Madness isn't John Carpenter's best horror movie to date, but it may well be his scariest.
IONCINEMA.com
Nicholas Bell
In the Mouth of Madness features some notable special effects and maintains some of its unsettling atmosphere thanks to its subversive, cerebral ideas.
TheFrightFile.com
Dustin Putman
Chillingly blurs the lines between truth and fantasy, between logic and the malevolently illogical.
