Two impoverished couples invent a stratagem to make a living: beautiful Rita (Monica Vitti) pretends to be a prostitute and upon advance payment takes the customers to her room. When she shows the unfortunate punter the bed still inhabited by the body of her deceased husband--who is actually alive and well--people run away horrified, also thanks to the presence of Agostino (Eduardo De Filippo) and his top hat, which makes everything even more lugubrious.
