Hyenas Ratings & Reviews

A really effective drama about post-colonialism, consumerism, corruption, revenge, power and the fragility of value systems in the face of massive inequality. The actor who played Dramaan was so magnetic in his performance. Ramatou was cold af, especially with that one line she dropped, “The world made a whore of me, now I turn the world into a whorehouse.” I think a lot of people hate hyenas because they don’t like seeing their own greed reflected back at them. This was my first time watching a movie in the Wolof language and found it to be a powerful experience.

Djibril Diop Mambéty's 1992 film resonates primarily for its lacerating comedic writing and pacing.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
Dark political satire about corruption is set in Western Africa.

Mambéty has spoken of his film as portraying the corrupting influence of Western influence and money on African countries, but there's more than one way to interpret the story.
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)
John Beifuss
This comic masterpiece about a wealthy woman who plunges an African village into chaos is definite in its targets (the persistence of colonialism as consumerism, especially) but universal in its consideration of human existence as both tragedy and farce.
The Hollywood Reporter
John DeFore
A wicked skewering of both the rich and those who seek their handouts.
The Stranger (Seattle, WA)
Jas Keimig
The film falls somewhere between satire, drama, and comedy.

Mattie Lucas
A haunting, dreamlike, often absurd morality play, told with roguish mischievousness that only Mambéty could conjure.
The Stranger (Seattle, WA)
Charles Mudede
The greatest film made by a black African is Djibril Diop Mambéty's Hyenas.
Chicago Reader

Mambety doesn't just point to the evil but fully implicates himself in it-as is shown by the fact that he himself plays the former judge now working as a servant to the rich. Maybe he's saying something about making movies as well.
