After being fired, pro basketball scout, Stanley Sugerman, is excited, for the first time in a very long while, when he serendipitously discovers Spanish amateur baller, Bo Cruz, playing in a park outside Madrid. Fueled with new-found purpose, Stanley makes it his mission to groom Bo for the NBA as he believes they both can make it.

I love when Sandler takes on more dramatic roles. He typically delivers with his performance in such roles. That being said, the phrase “new Netflix - Adam Sandler film” doesn’t exactly presuppose a that you’re going to get one of those uncut gems. I guess that’s likely what makes Hustle such a pleasant surprise. I really, really enjoyed this flick. In some ways a modern take on the Kevin Bacon classic The Air Up There 😝. The film is injected with quite a lot of heart and emotion. I really loved the relationship between Sandler and Queen Latifah. I think Queen Latifah is a criminally underrated actress even though she has a someone minimal role here, her presence is extremely affecting. This is one of those films where it’s a pretty straight forward story that you could probably guess exactly where it’s all headed, but a story well told can still find ways to move you unexpectedly. Hustle definitely has 1 or 2 of those moments at the end that are perfectly crafted to jerk a tear or two from this softy.

Going into this one, I was looking for something fun, lighthearted and a good time, the kind of movie you put on when you just want to feel good. What I got instead was a slow, surprisingly heavy story about a struggling basketball scout grinding through disappointment and setbacks. Not exactly what I had in mind. Don't get me wrong, the basketball scenes are solid and Adam Sandler clearly put real effort into this role, but if you're coming in expecting the usual Sandler charm and laughs, you're going to be caught off guard. The tone is far more serious than the trailers let on, and for most of the runtime you're watching things go wrong for people you're just starting to care about. There is a payoff at the end, and yes, it does deliver a moment of genuine feel-good warmth, but honestly it felt like a long walk for just a few minutes of the uplift I came for. By the time it arrived, I had already mentally checked out a couple of times. If you're in the mood for a fun, feel-good Adam Sandler experience, do yourself a favor and just rewatch Happy Gilmore. You'll thank yourself later

Sandler is at it again with his quirky dramady and it works well. It has an equal amount of humor and drama to achieve this heartwarming gem of a movie.
