Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1
Directed by Kevin Costner- Hendrik PapeFebruary 4, 2025Cinematography 5 stars, plot 0 stars. I’ve never seen a movie with a plot that’s harder to follow than this one. It was all over the place with little character development. The last 10-15 minutes were what felt like fast forward showing, what I hope are, scenes from future movies. I’m still committed to watching the rest of the movies but I will have to see how number 2 turns out.
- Junior ReyesMay 1, 2025The cruelty of the Old West. What a magnificent cast. What an extraordinary story. I couldn't stop, not for a single moment until the end, imagining how difficult it was for the first settlers to move this country forward. A very harsh reality, but real. I understand there are five chapters; I'm dying for them to make them so I can enjoy it. Magnificent!!!
- funnyduck_07May 31, 2025watching the movie in MSK|Russia, and i glad to see Kevin in his fav. a number of movies in 90s is pretty good, one of my favs is "Dancing with wolfs" and it seems like coming back. Personally i would add some philosophy to this scenario. However the movie is 5+ as i don't like latest hollywood films. Kevin looks pretty handsome and goodluck for him. Cheers i got a glass of "Isle of skye" and enjoy the movie.
- JeremiahJanuary 7, 2026A mess unfortunately. I was hoping for more but with so much time since KCs last directorial effort (the very good Open Range), seems hes lost the groove. Feels like KC wanted his own Lonesome Dove sized epic saga, but with this first effort, it’s disjointed and waffles about like nobody’s business. The storytelling, editing and pacing is confusing and fairly amateur. None of the characters are all that likable. And by the end of it, it gives you a 5 min montage scene of the 2nd movie which looks like the much better movie. That all said. I am at least marginally interested in what’s next, just really hope it is something much better than this one. It's looking like we won't ever get all 4 movies though, so im kinda hoping they can go in and cap it off somehow at the end of 2, if that one ever sees the light of day that is.
- A.SDecember 28, 2025This is my first time watching a western, and it’s not too bad of an introduction. I enjoyed the multiple plots really interesting to have multiple storylines instead of following one in a 3hr time length, leaves you trying to guess what’s next. It was slow in some parts and I had a harder time sitting down for some of it, but I think that could be more a personal issue rather something to necessarily criticize the movie for. I personally enjoyed seeing that there are some characters that aren’t inherently bad or good but morally/ethically grey. I’ve always enjoyed those character plots so it was interesting to see that in a western.
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Solidly entertaining, lots of storylines and characters to get acclimated to, and none of them feel like they have complete arcs by the end. As such is distinctly feels like (and I know everyone has already said this) the first few episodes of a television series—particularly that sizzle reel that plays at the end. It’s compelling and I will be looking forward to seeing more of it whenever it comes out. But I’m most definitely gonna need a refresher course on all of the storylines that happened in this one. And I would expect this 3 star rating to potentially go up or down depending on how the rest plays out.
- Mister ArnMay 24, 2025In "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1," Kevin Costner aims to craft an epic Western with a narrative spanning many hours. While this ambitious project holds promise, the first film doesn’t meet expectations. Rather than building to a climax, it ends with what feels like an extended teaser for future installments. Though it has the potential to become a favorite Western when complete, as a standalone film, it misses the mark.
